Several Lake District campsites have been in business for a good number of years – but this place takes that just a little bit further. In fact, The Church House Inn has been accommodating travellers to this part of Cumbria since the 14th century – a pretty lengthy history by anyone’s measure. Part of the reason behind its longevity is the handy location in Torver, where two roads meet – the A593 and A5084 as they’re known these days. And the fabulous view doesn’t hurt either; no doubt many visitors over the centuries have enjoyed gazing up at the Old Man of Coniston while they’re here. There are lots of great trails nearby for walkers and cyclists who’d like to see some more of the local scenery, including routes along the edge of nearby Coniston Water. The inn doesn’t function as a pub these days, but there’s another just a couple of minutes’ walk away so you’ll still be able to have a refreshing pint at the end of a day of walking or other outdoor activities. There are also traditional pubs, cosy cafés and takeaways five minutes’ drive away in Coniston, the village that’s also the boarding point for the National Trust’s steam gondola rides. Kids and dogs are welcome on site here, and there’s space to set up your gazebo or awning; you’re also welcome to bring a barbecue to cook on. Simple facilities stretch to the essentials of toilets, showers and a washing-up area.

Tyckte inte om Only one toilet, with one additional toilet in the shower room and a portaloo. These were not very clean.

Tyckte om Toilet and shower facilities were great, modern, and clean.
Campsite was lovely, lots of space and gorgeous views with a short walk to the pub and good access to walking routes. Also good location to travel to other parts of the Lakes

Tyckte om great location, really quiet. very clean facilities. the owner was really helpful and even borrowed me a couple of items.

Tyckte inte om lack of facilities (one small shower room), no hot water in washing up but hot toilet taps and shower.

Tyckte om Really enjoyed our 2 night stay at The Church House Inn. The site is lovely and quiet and well maintained. The owner is very friendly and helpful. The shower facilities are a great bonus to the site. The owner has done a great job of maintaining the building and land keeping from going to ruin. There is a pub over the road that we visited once for food and Coniston is approximately 15 minutes drive away.

Tyckte om Pub very close by! Lovely food. Camping site seems decent couldn't really comment on much as was first outing with new tentbox.
The views around in the morning was lovely. Just what I needed having a morning brew.

Tyckte om Great location plenty of space for kids to run. 20min walk to the lake through the fields and woods which kept the kids busy rather than asking are we there yet 🤣. Lovely pub across the road with a little deli shop attached. Definitely will go back.

There area lots of great walks to try around here, including challenging hikes up the Old Man of Coniston (10 minutes' drive to the trailhead), accessible trails at Tarn Hows (15 minutes) and lovely walks with sculptures to look out for at Grizedale Forest (half an hour). You can also learn a bit about the area’s industrial past as you wander at Coniston Copper Mines (15 minutes). And as this is the Lake District, how about getting out on the water for a bit? You can hire kayaks, canoes and paddleboards from Coniston Boating Centre or take a ride on the National Trust - Steam Yacht Gondola from Coniston Pier (both 10 minutes). While you’re in Coniston, pay a visit to the Ruskin Museum before moving on to his former home at Brantwood (15 minutes), in a gorgeous spot overlooking the lake. Looking a little further afield, you may like to take a wander along the cobbled streets of Hawkshead (15 minutes), delve into Cathedral Cavern (25 minutes) or see where Beatrix Potter once lived at National Trust - Hill Top (25 minutes).
