Space, more space and utter peace are the watchwords at Willenhall Way, a family-run and dog-friendly Shropshire park near Ellesmere and a mere field away from the Welsh border. The owners are pleased to share their slice of scenic countryside, where ultra-large pitches have loads of room between each one for extra privacy. Access from the A495 is clearly signposted, easy and wide. Once on site, all is calm and quiet. The immaculate shower block (with separate ladies' and gents' and accessible facilities, plus an immaculate washing-up room) is on the site of a former piggery, while outside the caravan office guests can get together on the covered verandah to relax, eat and chat amid peaceful views. Your kids can have hours of fun at the leisure area with swings, a watch mound – and calf igloos to use as dens (useful if the weather is not playing ball) – or see how many murals they can spot around the park. Dogs get to share in the fun too. Exercise pets on the tried-and-tested walks leading directly from the park into glorious Shropshire countryside, and make the most of the dedicated doggie shower to clean them up again after any muddy outings. For family adventures, try the circular walking routes of varying lengths, or follow the Shropshire Union Canal towpath for easy-peasy strolls with the kids. There’s plenty for cyclists too, with rural lanes and a generous supply of Shropshire hills close by. And should you have any time to spare, a resident artist holds classes for guests. And if you should wonder how the park got its name, it’s from the Willenhall Herd of dairy cows who graze just across the Welsh border on a neighbouring farm.

Tyckte om We had a lovely, friendly welcome on arrival and were able to pitch up wherever we liked. We chose a spacious pitch that had been cut into the longer grass, which made it feel a little more secluded/special. The toilets/showers/washing up block was absolutely fantastic and very modern. My daughter (7) loved the various swings dotted around the site and playing in the domes with other children. There's a footpath through the fields that takes you to the village of Welshampton, where there is a lovely pub. Will definitely be back!

Tyckte om Space around pitches, friendly welcome, lovely facilities, kids had a great time on the play equipment, friendly atmosphere. Overall a great place to stay for first extended camping trip. The use of fridge freezer was great as the weather was really hot.

Tyckte om Lovely owners who were always so cheerful and helpful. The facilities were modern and clean. Our kids (aged 12 and 9) loved the play area. Loved our pitch and how sections were cut out of the wild grass - creating a large area just for us and stopping people walking near our tent. The communal fridge/freezer was really useful. The ice cream was yummy. We visited Hawkstone Park Follies which was 24 mins away and was incredible and shady which was perfect. There was no music playing which was a dream for me! Thank you for a lovely stay.

Tyckte om Well maintained site with clean facilities great amazing little play area for kids with a bike ride on tractor chairs teddies swing ball hula hoops! The showers are amazing so clean and looked after with proper showers available. The pitches are level and really big nice quiet site. The owner was a lovely friendly lady. So much wildlife nesting tawny owls on site. Seating outside for bbqs and outside the office if you need so shade! The most yummies icecream available on site too

Tyckte om The campsite was very well kept, all of the communal areas were very clean and the amenities were excellent. The sizes of the pitches were also brilliant! You were given plenty of space which made it feel like home away from home! We felt very safe whilst on site and would definitely revisit!

Ellesmere (five minutes’ drive) is a busy little town and base for watery adventures on The Mere, a lake that forms part of Shropshire’s mini-lake district. Hire a boat, follow the sculpture trail, feed the swans or follow the all-ability trail around the shoreline. When you’re done with all that activity, find a waterfront pub and chill out amid the glorious views. Pretty Llangollen (35 minutes) has lots to offer water babies too, from horse-drawn or motorised barge adventures over the famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct to Horseshoe Falls and family walks alongside the River Dee. Sporty types can get busy on Alderford Lake (10 minutes), popular for paddleboarding, wild swimming or challenging romps on the inflatable water course. To up the physical stuff even more, try the treetop rope courses, swings and slides at BeWILDerwood Cheshire. Keen racegoers are catered for as well, with a programme of year-round jump racing at Bangor-on-Dee (both 20 minutes).
