An intimate, dog-friendly spot on the outskirts of Leominster (five minutes’ drive or a 25-minute walk), Hen House Hideaway is full of home comforts. Take in the views across the Herefordshire countryside from the large decking area (designed for dining and entertaining) or retire to the cosy interior for the night. With a kingsize bed and TV in the main bedroom, plus a single bed and double sofa bed in the ‘nest box’, this is a great place for a small gathering of four to five people or a family escape to the country. The design is based on a hen house, though – of course – it’s a much larger version with a bathroom (including a shower), utility room and kitchen. The kitchen has a gas oven, Belfast sink, microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster and crockery, so you’ll be well equipped whether you’re craving tea and toast or a full-on cooked breakfast. In the market town of Leominster you can pick up artisan eats or extra supplies. The town also has a leisure centre with a swimming pool, fitness suite and soft-play area. If you’re after more entertainment, Grove Golf & Bowl (10 minutes’ drive) has an 18-hole golf course, miniature golf, driving range and ten-pin bowling. Oaker Wood (15 minutes) is another activity centre with clay pigeon shooting, quad biking and paintball. Topping up your energy stores will be easy with a visit to the Monkland Cheese Dairy (five minutes), a working dairy farm with a tearoom.

Tyckte om: Fantastic accommodation in a lovely, peaceful location overlooking cornfields and mountains in the distance Perfect for a small family - we were a couple with a 10 year old. The accommodation is well equipped and tastefully decorated and we liked the hen theme! We were provided with a mini hamper including fresh eggs, milk and home made cakes!

National Trust properties in the area include Berrington Hall (15 minutes’ drive), a country house with a landscaped garden and a lake, and Croft Castle and Parkland (20 minutes). Woodland walks surround this refurbished medieval castle, while seasonal plants bring colour to the walled garden. Combining gardens of the world with much-loved children’s books, Ralph Court Gardens (25 minutes) is a top spot for the entire family. While the children explore the Alice in Wonderland area or embrace their inner pirates on a galleon, the adults stroll through a recreation of Monet’s Water Lily Garden or a Japanese garden with a ginkgo biloba tree. The cathedral in Hereford (half an hour) is home to the Mappa Mundi and a rare chained library. Admire the period furniture in the Black and White House Museum, in a 17th-century timber-framed building, or stroll along the River Wye in Bishops Meadow. If the kids clamour for some action, Matrix is an entertainment venue with an arcade, laser tag, miniature golf, axe throwing and soft play.
