If you’re organising an outdoorsy Cumbria break with a little luxury sprinkled into the mix, a splendid spot to select is Inside Out Camping Yurts at Seatoller – this glamping site is in a quiet corner of a family-run farm in the Lake District National Park, 20 minutes’ drive from Keswick. Walking straight out to some of the area’s highest hills, including both Scafell Pike and Great Gable, is possible from this site set 20 minutes’ drive from Keswick. Watersports, boat trips and climbing outings are all a cinch to sort too, and it’s a five-minute drive to the Honister Mine for underground tours and climbing sessions on via ferrata trails. Stunning scenery isn’t just for folk who head out hiking, however: those who’d rather settle in on site can still gaze out over the Borrowdale valley or take a gentle wander by the Derwent River, which runs past the grounds. The woodland next to the farm brims with wildlife, so you might also spot owls, woodpeckers and other passing birds while sticking around here. Retreat indoors to your five-metre yurt once you’ve had enough time in the open air – each one is kitted out with a woodburning stove, solar lights, futon beds, a well-equipped kitchen with a gas cooker and an outdoor area with a barbecue and seating. The essential facilities have also had a bit of thought put into them. There’s a cold water tap close to the yurts, toilets are a couple of minutes’ walk away, and free showers with plenty of hot water are a five-minute walk away in a converted barn.

Yurt

Gostou Great for those (like our group) who want to walk into the countryside experience without having all the gear. There is literally everything you would need in the yurt. Spotless, spacious and situated right in the heart of the Lakes. The starscape at night is awesome as there is so little light pollution in the area.

Gostou As a group of 5 travelling to the lake district with public transports, we massively enjoyed our 3 nights stay at the Yurts. Basic facilities like showers with warm water, toilets, bedding (includes for 4 people plus an air mattress for the 5th), gas hob, fireplace (it comes with firewood!), plates and utensils and even a barbecue, were all in good condition and convenient to use. The site is also conveniently located at the foot of Scafell Pike, which helps getting up early and get ahead of the crowds. The route from this side is also more enjoyable than from Wesdale anyways. The area around the site has plenty of nature to explore. The site is served by busses 78, 77a and 77c, which makes getting to and from Keswick and Buttermere easy. This means you can climb hills like Great Gable, High Stile, Catbells, Blecanthrea and Skiddaw easily in a day trip on public transport.

If you have all 5 people space can be a little tight once all beds are laid out, but nothing unreasonable. We still had the space to play card games. One of the best things is with 5, the cost per person per night is only 25 pounds, even cheaper than hostels! However do note there is basically 0 reception in the site.

All in all I would highly recommend to stay here. Oh you can also sometimes get pizza from the farm store for dinner!

Yurt

Gostou Stayed in a yurt with family of 4 and a border collie, second year of visiting (used our own tent last year). Communication was great. Site amazing. No signal or electricity which is one reason why we came. Log burner a god send as it rained pretty much the whole time we was there. Site gets muddy but can be expected when you are in the wettest part of the lakes. Still manageable though. To get to showers you have to walk on the road but I love this feature. Part of the reason I love camping is because you have to 'work' for the little things but it makes you appreciate life more and you get to be in the moment and see the views. Loved that we didn't have to really bring anything, great with a family and a small car. Loved being by the water and hearing it at night. Site is a great location for plenty of walks. Not too far from keswick either.

Gostou Lovely stay at Seatoller farm.
Yurt was lovely and clean on arrival.
Futon beds were really comfortable and it was So cosy and warm with log burner on in an evening after a day out exploring.

Não gostou The showers were a little walk from site and would have been easier with young children if they were closer but toilets are close by so isn’t a big issue.

Gostou There was everything you needed and more. So cozy and homely. Staff were all really lovely and friendly. Great atmosphere.

Gostou The location was perfect, the campsite was lovely, yurt excellent, loads of hidden little gems in the village, we loved everything and the kids were really sad to leave this morning!

Take the B5289 south from Keswick for approximately 7.5 miles. Before you are in Seatoller, make a left turn for Seathwaite. The yurts are in the field on the left, immediately after a small bridge 10 metres from the junction (you should see them easily from the road). A bus service runs between Keswick and Seatoller during the day.

It’s not a Lakeland break without bobbing along on a boat somewhere, so dawdle over to Derwentwater to hire a vessel (10 minutes’ drive) for a spot of sailing. You also can’t come to Cumbria without embarking on a walk or two, so navigate your way on routes up the popular Catbells (15 minutes) or take on a serious challenge by scaling Helvellyn (half an hour), the third-highest peak in the Lake District National Park. This is also a sought-after spot for mountain biking if you have a need for speed. Gentler jaunts are to be had around Rydal Hall Gardens (40 minutes), the Castlerigg stone circle (25 minutes) and among the animals at the Lake District Wildlife Park (half an hour). Don’t skip Keswick (20 minutes) either – this cute town has a pencil museum, brewery, swimming pool and theatre, so it’s a smashing spot to visit when the weather’s not quite good enough for wandering around outdoors.
