Space around the yurts

General

  • Smart, well-equipped yurts on a family-run Lake District farm
  • A 10-minute drive from Derwentwater and 20 from Keswick
  • Next to the Derwent river, with fab views of Borrowdale

If you’re organising outdoorsy Cumbria hols with a little luxury sprinkled into the mix, the spot to select is Inside Out Camping Yurts at Seatoller – this glamping site is in a quiet corner of a family-run farm in the Lake District National Park, 20 minutes’ drive from Keswick.

Walking straight out to some of the area’s highest hills, including both Scafell Pike and Great Gable, is possible from this site set 20 minutes’ drive from Keswick. Watersports, boat trips and climbing outings are all a cinch to sort too, and it’s a five-minute drive to the Honister Mine for underground tours and climbing sessions on via ferrata trails.

Stunning scenery isn’t just for folk who head out hiking, however: those who’d rather settle in on site can still gaze out over the Borrowdale valley or take a gentle wander by the Derwent River, which runs past the grounds. The woodland next to the farm brims with wildlife, so you might also spot owls, woodpeckers and other passing birds while sticking around here.

Retreat indoors to your five-metre yurt once you’ve had enough time in the open air – each one is kitted out with a woodburning stove, solar lights, futon beds, a well-equipped kitchen with a gas cooker and an outdoor area with a barbecue and seating.

The essential facilities have also had a bit of thought put into them. There’s a cold water tap close to the yurts, toilets are a couple of minutes’ walk away, and free showers with plenty of hot water are a five-minute walk away in a converted barn.

The location of the yurts/campsite was beautiful just outside of Keswick. The yurt itself was clean and tidy upon arrival and had essentials that you would need. The fairy lights and sky lights made it more romantic sleeping under the stars in front of the raging log fire. The facilities (shower&toilets) are basic but great if you understand that you are actually still camping and you are in a field which people tend to forget. They were more than what we were expecting anyways and the walk to each are not as far as most reviews state.

    Disliked:

The only potential dislike would be that there is no electricity but that is one of the elements that make a trip like this fun. I can guarantee that it wouldnt be missed even by a couple in their 20's who have smart phones attached to their hands 24/7.

From the manager...

The area was really beautiful, literally in the mountains, surrounded by sheep fields and a waterfall. There is a river that runs alongside the site which is swimable and didn't feel cold (once we got in).
We decided to ditch the tent this year and go for something where we didn't have to over pack the car and we were not disappointed. The Yurt had everything in it we needed including a log burner that kept us warm on that odd cold evening and allowed us to dry those wet clothing after a very wet mountain hike.
The campsite is about a 15 minute drive through the scenic valley to Keswick winding its way along the base of mountains, along the shore of Derwent water which in itself added to the whole experience..... And if you don't want to drive the part opentop bus's runs regularly into town.
The owner is friendly, the shower block had hot water and was clean, and loads to do..
A great place to stay. We won't be staying anywhere else on our return to the Lakes.

Local attractions

It’s not a hol in Lakeland without bobbing along on a boat somewhere, so dawdle over to Derwentwater to hire a vessel (10 minutes’ drive) for a spot of sailing.

You also can’t come to Cumbria without embarking on a walk or two, so navigate your way on routes up the popular Catbells fell (15 minutes) or take on a serious challenge by scaling Helvellyn (half an hour), the third-highest peak in the Lake District National Park. This is also a sought-after spot for mountain biking if you have a need for speed.

Gentler jaunts are to be had around Rydal Hall Gardens (40 minutes), the Castlerigg stone circle (25 minutes) and among the animals at the Lake District Wildlife Park (half an hour).

Don’t skip Keswick (20 minutes) either – this cute town has a pencil museum, brewery, swimming pool and theatre, so it’s a smashing spot to visit when the weather’s not quite good enough for wandering around outdoors.

Must see

  • Cars of the Stars Motor Museum (10.0 kilometres)
  • Whinlatter Forest & Visitor Centre (10.7 kilometres)
