Mountain views, sandy beaches and a rich cultural heritage – what more do you need to click on the green button and book your spot at Afon Braint? This peaceful rural site – which is so close to the Welsh river of the same name and its Giant Rhuddgaer Stepping Stones (15 minutes’ walk), it has borrowed that very name for itself – sits on Anglesey’s south-eastern corner, within the coastal belt that makes up the Anglesey Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. On the A4080 road between the villages of Niwbwrch (just under a mile, about 20 minutes on foot) and Dwyran (five minutes’ drive or a 25-minute walk), Afon Braint comes with spacious gravel touring pitches. Be aware that there is no electric hook-up; what is there, though, are essentials such as a toilet block and fresh drinking water, plus grey and chemical waste disposal points. Spectacular views of the peaks of Eryri (Snowdonia) accompany the meals you consume in the picnic area, and there’s also a restaurant with a large patio and covered pods if you want to take in the mountain vistas regardless of the weather. The nearest pub is in Niwbwrch, which also has a fish and chip shop and a supermarket, with more shopping and dining options in Llangefni (20 minutes) and Bangor (25 minutes). Windswept strolls await at Maes Parcio Ynys Llanddwyn and Newborough Beach (15 minutes), a nature reserve with a large dune system, marshes and a pine forest, plus tidal Llanddwyn Island (20 minutes), with a lighthouse overlooking the rocky shore. .

Gostou Very warm welcome and easy to find. The gent who met us at the gate was really friendly and professional. He showed us to our pitch and made sure we got our electric hooked up and working. He then gave me a brief tour of the facilities before leaving us to it. Ideal hassle free short stay option.

Gostou Everything. This site has been well thought out to a very high standard. It is well maintained, lovely and clean with the most beautiful views. The warm welcome we received with a tour of the site, to the delivery of pizza and chips to the van for tea. Even the dog was given VIP treatment with a welcome sausage. The toilet was lovely and warm even on a frosty night. I would highly recommend this site to anyone, and we will definitely be back when in the area. Thank you for such a lovely stay where every detail small and big was given careful consideration by the owners to make they stay perfect.

Gostou Great views of the snowy mountains, level H/s pitch, quiet spot, chef style pot wash tap, heated toilet cubicle. Cafe on site but didn’t get to try it as it was closed for the Christmas break. Friendly and helpful owner.

Não gostou Nothing, but only to suggest a bigger dog poop bin with a handle to left the lid.

Gostou Good sized pitches, very well organised and laid out. Good facilities very clean and tidy. On check in met by Nick who explained everything to make stay easy and stress free. Excellent customer service, nothing seems to be too much trouble. Option to have food delivered directly to the camper van at a time to suit us in the evening, which we took advantage off, food made fresh and delivered hot. Had breakfast in the cafe, again good value for money, good service, nice staff. Location great for walking to the Forest, Beach and Island.

Gostou Lovely little site, just off the road as you approach Newborough. The gate was closed when I arrived but there’s a mobile number to call and having done that, I was greeted and given access to the site.

I was given a brief tour and shown all the amenities, which are spot on for my needs. I have a Renault Trafic converted and the EHU allowed me to just reverse into the bay and off I went.

The toilet and wash up station are spot on, hot water on tap. There were other services which I didn’t need.

The little information hut has the WiFi password and the signal was more than good enough for streaming on my tablet.

I stayed for two nights but didn’t stray too far. In fact, having arrived near dark, after I got set up I just chilled out. The following morning I walked down to the stepping stones and decided that I’d spend my afternoon there, so I went back for my camping chair and had the bank by the river all to myself for a few hours, which was just what the doctor ordered.

Having ordered a pizza in the cafe before I went out, my tea was sorted when I got back and I was able to cosy up in the van as it got buffeted around by the weather.

It was just me using the site and that suited me fine. I loved it, slept really well and saw a marsh harrier from the back of my van which made my whole weekend.

It cost me £50 for the two nights with EHU and access to the facilities, I’m happy that it was good value and wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again.

A drive along the Menai Strait takes you past National Trust - Plas Newydd House and Gardens (15 minutes’ drive), with a large mural by early 20th-century artist Rex Whistler, to Pili Palas Nature World (20 minutes), home to meerkats, lizards and butterflies. Continue on to Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens (20 minutes) for strolls among woodland and past waterfalls. Alongside collections of archaeology and local crafts, Oriel Môn (20 minutes) also displays works by modern and contemporary artists such as Charles Tunnicliffe, known for his depictions of birds, and landscape painter Sir John Kyffin Williams. Cross the modern Britannia Bridge (or drive a little further to the Victorian Menai Suspension Bridge) and on to Caernarfon (half an hour), where a multiturreted medieval castle sits at the mouth of the river Afon Seiont. Stroll along the marina or climb up to the Caernarfon Tower for far-reaching views across the Menai Strait.
