Rural rambles without having to leave base – bag a berth at Blaithwaite House, 10 minutes’ drive from the market town of Wigton, for a taste of life on a Cumbria country estate. And not just any old country estate – this one stretches for a generous 200 acres, bringing with it 50 acres of woodland to frolic in, and a walking trail that covers over two miles (Yes, it’s a big place, so best be picking up a map before striding forth.) Enjoyed that warm up? More walks, bike rides and other outdoorsy pursuits are 10 minutes’ drive away in the Lake District National Park or 20 minutes away on the Solway coast. Time to catch your breath? Settle in on site for splendid views over the Solway Firth or to cook up something tasty at the barbecue and firepit area (shop ahead and you can stash your supplies in the site’s fridges and freezer). If cooking doesn’t appeal, decamp to a local pub – two such establishments an easy five-minute drive away serve up homemade food. Still got energy to burn? Play areas, a football field and a playing field offer plenty of space to let off steam. If you’ve got a gaggle of buddies on hand, book ahead to mercilessly hunt them down with a game of laser tag… but whatever you get up to, don’t forget to give a cheery wave to Snowy the goat and her chicken pals. The site may be sizeable, but facilities aren’t far-flung – washing-up areas and individual toilets and showers are in the pitches field and supplied with hot water from the eco-friendly biomass boilers.

Gostou We stayed here as a group of 8 with 2 caravans and had an amazing time from start to finish. The owners were incredibly welcoming and made us feel at home straight away, which really set the tone for the whole trip.

The scenery is absolutely stunning — perfect if you’re looking to relax and enjoy a proper break away.

Like most groups of lads, we had some music on, and we were politely told the next day it was just a little too loud. The way it was handled was spot on — really friendly and respectful. We apologised, turned it right down, and carried on enjoying the weekend without any issues.

We did have a small issue with the showers not working, but we mentioned it at reception and the guy there looked into it straight away and got it sorted for us quickly. That kind of response really shows how well the site is run.

Overall, it’s a great place with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Huge credit to the owners for how they run everything — we’ll definitely be back.

I’d highly recommend this site to anyone looking to get away with a group of friends.

Não gostou We went to the town, the pubs wasn’t the best so it’s best to stay on site if your looking for a great weekend.

Gostou Peaceful location with verdant surroundings. Camping under the canopy of a magnificent cedar tree. Dignified individual shower and toilet facilities ( for a change ) . Friendly and helpful staff. Great value for money . Would definitely camp here again

Gostou Lovely estate, nice campsite. Parts of the grass are a tad rocky but a little searching and you'll still get the pegs in. We had a lovely time will definitely stay again in the future.

Gostou Great campsite grass was perfect to pitch a tent up.
Brilliant shower and toilet facilities always clean, surprisingly no big spider surprises
Cows loved the jazz music we played👌🏽

Não gostou Lots of wasps at times (didn’t bother me but bothered the misses)😂
50 min drive to Lake District so wasn’t too accessible but was still okay for us.
We thought the fire pit prices were a bit on the pricey side (£15 for wood and £7.50 for fire pit)

Gostou Fabulous stay and such beautiful scenery! The staff we also very friendly. We will definitely return. The showers we so hot and always regularly cleaned. The beach wasnt far to drive to and we had such a good day. The town isn't far to drive to either, with everything you need.

Não gostou The fridge on site was freezing everything. But very grateful to even have this on site anyway.

Gostou Had an incredible stay at Blaithwaite House campsite. We booked very last minute during the bank holiday weekend but had plenty of room on the site. Lots of toilets and showers available and delicious food from the truck! Also amazing bar area with live music and great vibes!

Gostou Really nice site, and friendly staff, walked you to you’re pitch explaining all that’s on offer and what you can and can’t do, lovely scenery around, pitches were a decent size, food vans come each night we were there in the evening offering different food’s from a roast dinner inside a Yorkshire pudding to flat breads and burgers and waffles and ice cream, entertainment was good and the bar was reasonably priced, had a lovely sunny bank holiday weekend would deffo be returning

Não gostou Not as much as a dislike, just a recommendation, they could do with putting some mop and buckets in the showers as they get busy people didn’t have anything to clean the floors with, it was a bank holiday weekend and was busy, so possibly could do with a few more showers in the far field and could do with being a bit more spacious but where nice and warm and powerful only other thing I’d say was a bit pricey for a tent with electric should be no more than £40 per night for a pitch with electric and then all the add ons they charge like dogs and gazebos on top and no wifi as signal for mobiles is in a poor area

As well as the hiking trails of the Lake District National Park, active options nearby include Bassenthwaite Lakes, 20 minutes’ drive from base, where there are lakeside paths, boat hire and tours and tastings at Lakes Distillery. Derwentwater, half an hour away, has kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing; you could also get out on the water on an Ullswater Steamer at Pooley Bridge (access 40 minutes' drive away at Penrith), cruising by some of the area's highest peaks. Historical highlights are plentiful in the region too: Carlisle Castle and Mirehouse House and Gardens are both within half an hour, Gretna Green is 40 minutes away and the remains of the great Hadrian’s Wall are reachable in about an hour. Try something a little different at the Rheged Discovery Centre, 40 minutes away, where there are cafés, craft shops and a six-storey cinema screen, all in the UK’s largest grass-covered building.
