Dart off to Derbyshire and make for Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite in Stanton by Dale, a well-kept site attached to an award-winning pub. The name of this spot is a nod to Stanton's industrial heritage – if the village rings a bell, it may well be because 'Stanton' crops up on many a manhole cover across the UK. Nowadays, things are peaceful around here, and the site is set between traditional red brick houses and a small village green. The Chequers Inn is over 200 years old and still in fine fettle – its selling point remains its focus on real ales and proper home-cooked food. The pub, like the site, is mightily dog-friendly, so don't hesitate to bring four-legged friends along on your trip. The pitches here are level, well-drained and conveniently located to the rear of the pub. Although it's close to the M1, off-site strolls are unlikely to involve busy roads and traffic – Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite is a few minutes' walk from footpaths that'll take you through the pleasant fields and hills that make up the local landscape. The nearest supermarket can be found in Sandiacre (five minutes' drive); Ilkeston (10 minutes) has a wider range of shops and takeaways. Please note that kids under the age of 14 aren't allowed to stay at Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite.

Site pequeno e bem cuidado, apenas para adultos, atrás de um pub tradicional em vila tranquila. Com pitches amplos em piso duro, áreas gramadas e mesas de piquenique. Proprietários e funcionários amigáveis e acolhedores, comida excelente no Chequers Inn (reserve antes!) e localização perto da M1 são pontos altos. Banheiros no pub limpos e acessíveis 24/7. Poucas instalações (sem chuveiros) são notadas, mas a experiência geral positiva compensa. Recomendado para paradas e estadias curtas.

Gostou We’ve found our little gem, such a lovely little site which is nice and secure. Sue made us feel very welcome, we also really enjoyed watching Ken Moon (Harris Hawk) gracefully putting on a show. The Checkers Inn is a lovely place to relax with a pint and the food all home cooked by Sue was absolutely delicious.
We definitely highly recommend staying here, we definitely will be back.

Gostou This a fantastic site, with great pitches that are kept to the highest standard with your very own picnic bench and parasol. This is my 2nd stay and it wont be my last! Having 2 dogs there are many walks right from the front gate of the site, I walked for miles in open countryside.

The adjoining pub, The Chequers Inn, is welcoming especially with your four legged friends, treats are always available. The food is excellent and the range of beverages will suit all pallets.

The campsite plus the pub made a perfect stay for me and my 2 dogs.

I've been motorhoming for 2 years, this was my 1st site back in 2023 and it will take a lot to be beaten in my view.

Gostou Loved the peaceful setting...
A small site which was absolutely perfect...
Each individual pitch had a large hardstanding ,a grassed area with it own picnic bench and umbrella.
We stayed here for 3 nights as it was a base for us to use while our son got married...
Every one was lovely...
We didn't use The Checkers public house this time but have used before...
The food is excellent 👌 😋

Gostou The site and the adjacent pub were clean and set in lovely surroundings.The site is dog friendly with plenty of footpaths and routes for walks around the village.

The pitch was level, spacious and had a bonus small picnic table. Electric hook up, waste and clean water nearby.

The pub catering was excellent (remember to order the day before). Plenty of ale choices too.

Gostou Access is a short drive from the M1.
Very friendly and welcoming owners.
New clean site, well laid out flat pitch. Table and benches on each pitch with umbrella a nice touch. Toilets in pub available all night a short walk across the site.

Não gostou Access to the chemical waste tank is up some steps. No handrail for older unsteady customers could be an issue.
Chem toilet washing using a hose which needs to be connected and switched on prior to carrying toilet tank to emptying area. Not aware food was not available every night, best to check before booking.

Gostou Lovely clean well maintained site. All plots are hard standing with a grass area with Picnic benches and parasols a lovely touch. Checkers pub on site was lovely dog friendly and a beer garden. Food good and reasonably priced. Lots of local footpaths leading from the village.

Não gostou Very tight drive alongside the pub which had a line of cars parked on the road either side of it. Another gate half way up the drive which opened towards the inward traffic so a tight reverse to accommodate this . The caravan is then blocking the narrow road through the village.

Gostou Clean and tidy pitches with individual drain for grey water. Each pitch has its own lawn with picnic bench.
Pub on site with real ales.

Não gostou Toilet emptying into raised plastic container difficult. Rinsing with hose connected to same tap as drinking water tap requires planning as the tap is the length of the car park from the emptying point.

Main gate opens outwards so, if closed (outside pub opening times), it means sitting with rear end of caravan stuck out in roadway blocking traffic while opening.

Do a round of the greens at Erewash Valley Golf Club (20 minutes' walk), a well-kept local club with fab tree-lined fairways that's easily accessible on foot. Other outdoor pursuits around here include fishing, with the nearest angling spot about five minutes' drive away, and birdwatching – Attenborough Nature Centre (20 minutes) may be named after the nearby village rather than the TV presenter, but it's still a prime pick for a spot of ornithology. Nottingham city centre (20 minutes) is next up, for a castle, shopping centres and the interactive National Justice Museum. (Rather not drive around town? Pull up to one of the city's park and rides and take the tram instead.) On the outskirts of Nottingham is Wollaton Hall (20 minutes), an Elizabethan country house with a deer park and formal gardens. (Remember Batman's mansion in The Dark Knight Rises? Yep, that was filmed here.) Heading towards the Peak District National Park (from 45 minutes) is also on the cards, whether you opt for Derbyshire dalliances in the grounds of Chatsworth House (an hour) or old-time amusements and riverside walks in Matlock Bath (45 minutes).
