Take a dip into the world of medicinal plants at the 12th-century Daoulas Abbey (10 minutes’ drive), where a landscaped garden displays species from all over the world. The building itself is also well worth a visit, with its elegant Romanesque cloister. After that, drive a little further to Fun Park Dirinon to let the kids blow off a little steam on the treetop adventure course. There’s a vast network of hiking, mountain-biking and horse-riding trails within the Armorique Regional Natural Park (20 minutes), whose landscapes range from peat bogs to woodland and coastal stretches. Highlights include the Menez-Meur Domain zoo, with wolves, deer and local breeds of farmyard animals. Brest (half an hour) is a modern city with a lively harbour, which you can admire during a flight on the Téléphérique de Brest cable car. The National Maritime Museum, in the castle, illustrates the naval history of the region, while Oceanopolis, on the outskirts of the city, is an aquarium with themed areas including the Polar Pavilion (with penguins) and the Otter Trail.
