On a wooded spur jutting out into the Rade de Brest bay, peaceful Camping du Roz is an excellent choice for anybody looking to spend a holiday exploring the rugged coast of Brittany.
The small town of Logonna-Daoulas, with its boulangerie and supermarket (plus a handful of restaurants and bars), is a five-minute drive away (or a half-hour walk). However, the real highlight here is surely the fact that you're a mere five minutes' walk from the sea. Take an early-morning stroll to see the boats bob in the water at the sheltered grève de l’Anse du Roz beach – and maybe cast a line and see if anything bites.
There are more beaches within a five-minute drive, including rocky Plage de Porzisquin and Plage du Bindy – the latter a great spot to watch the sunset. If simply relaxing on the beach and dipping in and out of the water doesn’t quite do it for you, set off on a stroll along the Sentier côtier de l’Anse du Bourg, a great (and largely tree-lined) trail skirting the peninsula and leading to some pretty spectacular viewpoints.
Come the evening, let the kids expend the last of their energy in the playground or on the pétanque court while you fire up the barbecue, or gather the family and join the organised entertainment (tastings, concerts and other events) at the bar. By the way, the bar is also where you collect your pre-ordered baguettes and buttery croissants for breakfast.
Facilities on site include a toilet block with showers, a washing-up area and a launderette with drying room.

Take a dip into the world of medicinal plants at the 12th-century Daoulas Abbey (10 minutes’ drive), where a landscaped garden displays species from all over the world. The building itself is also well worth a visit, with its elegant Romanesque cloister. After that, drive a little further to Fun Park Dirinon to let the kids blow off a little steam on the treetop adventure course.
There’s a vast network of hiking, mountain-biking and horse-riding trails within the Armorique Regional Natural Park (20 minutes), whose landscapes range from peat bogs to woodland and coastal stretches. Highlights include the Menez-Meur Domain zoo, with wolves, deer and local breeds of farmyard animals.
Brest (half an hour) is a modern city with a lively harbour, which you can admire during a flight on the Téléphérique de Brest cable car. The National Maritime Museum, in the castle, illustrates the naval history of the region, while Oceanopolis, on the outskirts of the city, is an aquarium with themed areas including the Polar Pavilion (with penguins) and the Otter Trail.
