No kids allowed: Camping and caravanning for big boys and girls

Aug 9 2012 Gepost door Lewis Shields

With the summer holidays in full swing for a while now, life with the little ones can get perhaps just a tad tiring. If Mum and Dad could do with a quick bolt-hole escape for re-charging batteries - and some respite from the long summer break – Pitchup.com knows just the place.

The website features more than 200 adults only caravan sites and campsites, from lodge holidays to yurt stays, searchable by location, facilities and nearby attractions, so users can find exactly what they’re after from a country escape. Adult-only trips are on the rise, growing from 44% to 50% of domestic camping and caravan trips between 2006 and 2010*.

Here are Pitchup.com's top recommendations for last-minute getaways with the 'me-time' factor:

Hedgehog Corner Exclusive Camping, Dorset

Hedgehog Corner may sound as if its name is taken straight from a story-book but it’s actually a brand new addition to Pitchup.com’s list of child-free escapes. The peaceful, spacious site is the nearest campsite to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage HQ (three-minute drive, approx. 1.5 miles), so guests can pop down the lane for one of the cottage’s renowned summer dining events. Bed down under canvas and enjoy nostalgic nights under the stars with the other half. Pitches are priced from £15 per night.

Faerie-Thyme Camping, South Wales

Faerie-Thyme is back-to-basics camping at its best – the fields at the site are surrounded by ancient woodland, with direct access to some brilliant walks, to get restless adults up and about in the great outdoors. Nostalgia fans will love to stay in Katie the Caravan – a 16ft old quirky touring caravan in her own garden right up in the corner of the camping field with a fire pit and covered area outside. Katie is fully fitted out with everything needed for a break in Wales – all guests need to do is turn up and do as much or as little exploring as they like! Pitches are priced from £23.50 per night and Katie the Caravan is available for three nights for £105.

New Farm, Cheshire

Leave the kids behind but bring the dog to this dog-friendly site in the Cheshire. Anglers and nature spotters will be kept happy with three fishing lakes next to the park which attract lots of local wildlife, and there are lovely local pubs an amble away from the farm. Each pitch here comes with 16-amp electric hookup and there’s wifi available for a small charge – so guests don’t have to worry about staying in touch with your little ones at home. Pitches are priced from £21 per night.

Daisy Bank Touring Park, Powys

With the weather being as unpredictable as it is at the moment, cosy timber pods amidst heavenly hills on the Wales-Shropshire border are the ideal retreat from both daily routine and summer showers. Kitted out with king-sized beds and enjoying free wifi and luxe bathroom facilities, the glamping pods are perfect for those looking for a hassle-free escape away in the great outdoors. Pods are priced from £30 per night.
