The big attraction at this palm tree-shaded Lower Keys site is the proximity to the beach, which forms the boundary of the property along its eastern side. The water here is remarkably clear, inviting you to spend your days swimming, paddleboarding and snorkelling. No need to fret if you don’t have the necessary gear: an on-site store is stocked with equipment for most water-based pursuits. Then there’s the fishing, of course. The staff will be able to direct you to local outfits that charter boats for deep-sea fishing, so you can have a go at catching barracuda and snappers. Just past the engineering feat that is the Seven Mile Bridge, Turtle Hospital (20 minutes’ drive) is a rescue-and-release centre (with several permanent residents). In Key West (45 minutes), the Hemingway Home and Museum is famed for its population of six-toed felines, said to be the descendants of the author’s own cat.
