Those who want to embrace the relaxed Florida Keys lifestyle – beaches, fishing, cocktails by the pool and more along those lines – should find pretty much exactly what they’re looking for at Big Pine Key RV Park, an oceanfront site on Big Pine Key.
The big attraction at this palm tree-shaded Lower Keys site is the proximity to the beach, which forms the boundary of the property along its eastern side. The water here is remarkably clear, inviting you to spend your days swimming, paddleboarding and snorkelling. No need to fret if you don’t have the necessary gear: an on-site store is stocked with equipment for most water-based pursuits. Then there’s the fishing, of course. The staff will be able to direct you to local outfits that charter boats for deep-sea fishing, so you can have a go at catching barracuda and snappers.
The rooftop pool is a top spot for a piña colada and a selfie, and don’t worry about kids splashing about and ruining your mojo: there’s a daily adults-only session where you can swim in peace without having to dodge inflatable crocodiles.
If you fancy a waterfront stroll, it's handy to know the Long Beach Trail passes through the site. Alternatively, you could head to the National Key Deer Refuge Nature Center (five minutes’ drive) to learn about the local wildlife, then head further north to the Blue Hole Observation Platform (10 minutes), where you might spot the small and endangered Key deer, plus ospreys, alligators and iguanas.

Just past the engineering feat that is the Seven Mile Bridge, Turtle Hospital (20 minutes’ drive) is a rescue-and-release centre with several permanent residents. Educational tours teach you how to recognise different species of turtle. The Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters (25 minutes) has touch tanks and feed-the-animal experiences.
In Key West (45 minutes), the Hemingway Home and Museum is famed for its population of six-toed felines, said to be the descendants of the author’s own cat. At the westernmost tip of the island, Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park Beach is a well-preserved Civil War structure dating from 1845.
Head to Islamorada (an hour) to learn all about this long stretch of tropical islands at the Keys History & Discovery Center, with displays on ethnography, nature and art. Memorabilia at the History of Diving Museum ranges from diving helmets to scuba regulators.
