It’s quite alright if you want to unwind all day long at Downend Point Campsite, in the peaceful North Devon National Landscape. Mind you, you may find that quite hard with there being two surfing beaches nearby, both accessible via the South West Coast Path: Croyde Beach (five minutes’ walk) and Saunton Sands (half an hour on foot). Yes, you’re in quite the surfer’s playground here… Backed by sand dunes, Croyde Beach is popular with swimmers and surfers, although rockpooling and relaxing may help while away a few hours too. There’s a lifeguard service between May and September, and dogs are welcome on the beach outside of these months. Another walk along the South West Coast Path takes you to the Baggy Point Cliffs (45 minutes), or you can head inland to Croyde village centre (15 minutes), where you might decide to stop in one of the two pubs for a drink. Downend has its own café-bar too, which serves beer and wine, plus Sri Lankan curries, through the day and evening. Time it right, and you’ll get to see one of the site’s stunning sunsets over dinner. There’s also a surf school, surfboard hire and a beach shop on site. Clean and bordered by heather and hedgerows, the site has two acres of land. Facilities include clean, modern toilets, coin-operated hot showers and a washing-up area.

Fantastisch uitzicht op zee en locatie, vlakbij het strand. Personeel, vooral eigenaar Henry, zeer vriendelijk en behulpzaam. Café en bar met goed eten en sfeer. Sommige plekken lopen schuin af. Douches worden verbeterd, soms basic of betaald.

Ik was blij met View from campsite, beach and west facing for amazing sunsets. Lovely srilankan curries and kids food with gluten free and vegan options. Onsite bar with local beers not bad too. Oli was amazing, lent us some wood to help us level out the motorhome and made sure we were comfortable and looked after. Even tried to help us figure out why the gas cooker wasn’t working in the van.

Ik was niet blij met Busy site with lots of groups staying to hit the surf school on the local beach. Very young and hip vibe about the campsite. Be ready for luke warm outdoor showers ;)

Ik was blij met We love that it is so close to the beach and the food at the cafe is great. The sunset bar is a great place to obviously watch the sun set.

Ik was blij met What a lovely site. The chap who checked us in helped us to level the van, and explained everything to us. He was so helpful. The showers are outdoor (wooden cubicles with no roof), with lighting for night time, and were clean and hot! The view is stunning, seeing the sunset could not have been better. The sunset bar and the cafe are exceptional. Decent price, excellent quality and we would definitely stay again. Only 15 mins walk in to Croyde. We were actually gutted we hadn't booked another night or two!

Ik was blij met Excellent stay, the field has amazing views and pitches around the outside so it doesn’t feel packed in. The showers which look new are lovely, even without a roof!

Ik was blij met The view was amazing, what perfect way to wake up in the morning.
Location was great, practically on the beach, and only a short walk into the village where there is a selection of restaurants/bars/shops. Showers and toilets were clean throughout our stay. Staff were extremely friendly, helpful and accommodating.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

Other beaches in the vicinity include Woolacombe (15 minutes’ drive), a vast expanse of sand that’s popular for all sorts of watersports; and Tunnels Beach at Ilfracombe (25 minutes), whose rockpools and tidal pool are reached via a network of galleries excavated in the 1820s. Ilfracombe also has a sheltered harbour with a small aquarium. Watermouth Castle (half an hour) is a theme park with landscaped gardens, a maze and spectacular views of the Devon coastline. Family-friendly attractions include a toboggan run, a river ride and spinning teacups (except they use cooking pots here). There’s also miniature golf and the Hobbledown Bay adventure play area. If the kids are into animals more than thrill rides, take them to Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (half an hour), where they can get up close and personal with sea lions and help to feed the wolves. Residents at Exmoor Zoological and Conservation Centre (35 minutes) include cheetahs, capybaras and wallabies.
