Get set for long, lazy summer days near the sea – once the hay has been harvested, the folk at Pett Camping open up their meadows for guests to come along and spend some time hanging out in the East Sussex countryside. The peaceful pitches here are in the grazed flowering meadows owned by Lunsford Farm – which also has a farm shop a couple of minutes’ walk away from the site selling all sorts of tasty treats including lamb burgers, apple juice, honey and eggs. Meanwhile, if your rural break isn’t complete without a pint in a country pub, you’ll be pleased to hear it’s only a five-minute walk to the village of Pett and its pub (and also its tea shop and play park). The wider area is just as fabulous for visitors – the site is within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (so plenty of walks, bike rides and general scenery-viewing to be done) and about 10 minutes’ walk from Pett Level beach, a sandy/pebbly stretch with a fossil forest that appears at low tide (with a beachfront restaurant and a weekend food truck as well). Once you’ve explored your immediate surroundings, there’s plenty more around – including beach days, vineyard tours or days wandering around Rye or Hastings. Back at base, it’s all very laidback – guests are allowed to pick their own pitch and light campfires or barbecues (but don’t bring dogs, please, as there’s livestock around). The facilities stretch to just compost toilets so please note there are no showers.

Dit is een eenvoudige, rustige camping, geprezen om zijn prachtige landelijke uitzichten en uitstekende ligging nabij het strand en een pub. Gasten benadrukken de vriendelijke en behulpzame eigenaren. Hoewel de afwezigheid van douches en het beperkte, enkele composttoilet worden opgemerkt, vinden velen de eenvoud ideaal voor budgetvriendelijk, back-to-basics kamperen. Ik was blij met This is a basic campsite but we knew that and weren’t expecting any more. The views are fantastic - you can see down to the sea, apparently it’s walkable although we didn’t try, there’s a map in the toilets. There were some lovely sheep in the field next to us and plenty of space for the kids to run about without disturbing anyone else (I hope anyway!) we only stayed one night but it was easy and peaceful.

Ik was niet blij met It’s not all that flat, but it wasn’t too busy (on the last weekend of summer holidays, so probably doesn’t get all that much busier) so we were able to find a flat area to pitch up without much trouble.

Ik was blij met Nice views, great option for basic old fashioned camping if you’re on a budget and can do without showers for a couple of nights. Caroline was so responsive and lent use games when we hadn’t brought any. Nice compost toilet.

Ik was niet blij met If there are few people you can easily find a flat spot away from the road, but would be harder if it was fuller.

Ik was blij met We feel like we’ve been spoiled with such a great time at Pett Camping. We’ve just returned from 4 days at the site. Caroline offered us a pitch in the shade on one of the hottest days of the year which was very welcome as we have young children. SUCH a peaceful site. We’ve seen bats, shooting stars, and very happy children. Thank you. We will be returning.

Ik was blij met Amazing location - the site itself has great views and feels really rural, nice pub a very short walk up the road, plus the beach is either a short walk along the road or a slightly longer, very scenic route across country.
Site didn’t feel overbooked, lots of space.
The site is very basic but that’s clear before booking and wasn’t an issue for me. I’ve only given 3 stars for this but only in being honest regarding what’s available.
Caroline is lovely - very welcoming and helpful.
Really enjoyed my stay here.

Ik was blij met Loved the views and a great location close to Hastings. The sky's very dark at night here so was great for star gazing. Peaceful and quiet. Met the owner of the site, very nice Lady.

Ik was niet blij met Entrance to the site is a farm gate it's quite narrow and I struggled a bit to get my wide car through but managed. There's only 1 toilet on site and it's a composting toilet (sawdust on top) didn't bother us. There no showers or other facilities apart from a fresh water tap. Didn't dis-like any of this as we knew before we booked.

Ik was blij met Beautiful setting. Very peaceful and close to a lovely beach, a couple of nice pubs and some excellent hiking trails.

Ik was niet blij met Not a dislike but a suggestion. A second compost toilet wouldn't go amiss. It's a long old trek if you're asked to camp in the 'other' field and then have to wait for ages.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

It’s not a well-known tourist attraction, but the village of Pett has much to offer for visitors – it’s the kind of place where you can still watch cricket on summer weekend afternoons, stop by at the pub for a pint of local ale and/or join in with various activities in the village hall (a yoga class, perhaps, or something for the kids). Once you’ve spent some time at Pett Level beach (10 minutes’ walk), perhaps you’d like to get a little further along the coastline to the fossil hunting hotspot Fairlight Cove (20 minutes’ drive) or the stunning sand dunes of Camber Sands (25 minutes). Hastings (15 minutes) is another good option, with a historic tinge, and Rye (15 minutes) has a whole lot of antique shops as well as a harbourside nature reserve with bike hire available. If the kids demand a bit more action, try Knockhatch Adventure Park (45 minutes) – or take them to see the cute animals at the South of England Rare Breeds Centre (half an hour). Port Lympne Safari Park (45 minutes) is the place if they’re after bigger beast spottings.
