Gather the family, bring your dogs, get a little group of friends together, and get set for a quiet break in a particularly spectacular part of the country. Up at the northern edge of the Lake District National Park, about 10 minutes’ drive from Caldbeck, Howburn Farm Caravan Site is a small and peaceful site with glorious views across the surrounding landscapes from its touring pitches. All are welcome at this stripped-back farm site, but it's a particularly good spot for those who like to hike, as it’s on the route of the Cumbria Way and close to lots of the area’s famed Wainwrights – High Pike and Brae Fell are directly opposite the site, for starters. Heading further into the national park, you can reach Bassenthwaite and its lake with a 15-minute drive, or get to Keswick and Derwentwater in half an hour. The hardstanding pitches have water and electric hook-ups, and there’s access to a chemical disposal point but please note there are no guest toilets or showers. It’s a laidback spot with a generally peaceful atmosphere and often some great stargazing; you’re able to bring along a barbecue or hire a firepit on site to keep you warm in the evenings as long as you keep the flames sensibly under control.

Rustige, kleine camping op een idyllische locatie met prachtige heuveluitzichten en uitstekende sterrenkijkkansen. Gasten roemen de vriendelijke, behulpzame eigenaren en de nette, stille camping. Plaatsen met water en stroom. Makkelijk bereikbaar met de Pitchup locatiepin. Let op: er zijn schapen aanwezig.

Ik was blij met This is a lovely little site in an idyllic location with a fantastic view and a beautiful local area, stargazing at night was just amazing too.

Based in the middle of the commons this site is pure peace with very little traffic, very little noise and very few passers by. Just sheep and lovely views.Absolutely lovely.

Visits from resident dog Tess added to the enjoyment, our dogs loved saying hello and she's just a little sweetheart.

Site was gravel and grass, with large pitches, hookup, water on your pitch, and a chemical waste disposal point with refuse bins/recycling. The owners say hello on arrival, then leave you to it unless you need them which adds to the peace and quiet.

It's a lovely drive to the site, and the drive from A66 should be no problem for vans, motorhomes and towing vehicles. Be sure to take the scenic route, its really a lovely place to pull over and enjoy the scenery.

We recommend visiting oddfellows in caldbeck during your visit for food or a drink, short drive away, or walk if you feel like a longer stroll, but the food is very worth it.

We will absolutely be back to horburn farm. We loved every minute! Thank you for a lovely stay.

Ik was blij met Beautiful, peaceful and a welcome last minute stop over on our long journey home. The owners were very accommodating despite the short notice, as were the sheep! 😊

Ik was blij met What a wonderful location!! Easy access to Fells on the doorstep and lovely friendly owners to welcome you on site.

Use the location pin on Pitchup and you’ll get straight to the site - it wasn’t a challenge to find. Decent value as long as you don’t mind using your onboard facilities…

Ik was niet blij met Just be aware that there are sheep everywhere - so if you have a dog that’s ’sheep keen’ they’ll need to stay on a lead for their walks!

Ik was blij met Small, tidy site, courteous greeting from owner, pitches were level, on the small side not a lot of privacy between each pitch, luckily we were the only ones on site. Water and electricity on each pitch, views of surrounding hills,, the best tv signal we have ever had, probably due to the the very visible tv mast on the hill.

Ik was niet blij met I was expecting the roads to be narrow and difficult but in fact they were ok for our motorhome. What we found challenging was the lack of signage, the site needs a sign and some additional signage on approach roads. The site is not listed on google maps so needed to rely on directions from booking confirmation. No phone signal

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

You probably won’t complete the whole of the Cumbria Way while you’re here (it is 70 miles long, after all), but you can certainly tramp along part of the waymarked trail for a taste of what it offers. And you’ll have great access to the area’s Wainwrights too – not just High Pike and Brae Fell but also Binsey, Knott, Great Sca Fell… Skiddaw (half an hour’s drive) and Blencathra (35 minutes) might also be on your tick-list of trails if you’re feeling adventurous. If not, try easier trails like a gentle waterside stroll at Bassenthwaite Lake (20 minutes) or a jaunt along the Threlkeld Railway Path (half an hour). When you’re ready to give your boots a rest, plan an outing to one of the other local attractions – perhaps the Lake District Wildlife Park (15 minutes), Lakes Distillery (15 minutes) or Lowther Castle & Gardens (40 minutes). Keswick (half an hour) is also a good bet, with the Derwent Pencil Museum, The Puzzling Place and Theatre by the Lake, as well as watersports and boat trips.
