Orthwaite Pop-up Campsite

Mi è piaciuto The hosts were fantastic, we came in a big group of 16 and we had near enough the whole field to ourselves. Fire pits for hire, logs for sale, beautiful scenery, and within 20 minutes walk you have a fantastic climb leading to a spectacular view. Lidl was 20 mins away which was far enough to be away from civilisation but convenient enough to be able to do a few trips.

Non mi è piaciuto I personally didn't dislike anything, if you’re expecting facilities you’ll be disappointed. If you want an experience as close to wild camping this is the right place. Simple and easy.

Non mi è piaciuto While we appreciated information on local walks, the lack of detail was enough to get us lost, somem little diagrams would make a big difference. No access to the lake. Roads to it were terrible for camper vans and actually dangerous due some.of the other road users going too fast.

We are so sorry to hear you had a frustrating experience getting lost and that our walking directions weren't as detailed as they needed to be. That is certainly not the 'exploring' we want for our guests. Thank you for your tip to add diagrams, its a great way to help people get their bearings and we are currently working on incorporating some maps into the information sheet for future visitors. With regard to the lake, as much as we would like everyone to be able to enjoy access to the water it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), which is stated in our Pitchup listing. SSSI is a formal conservation designation in the UK that protects land or water deemed particularly valuable for its wildlife, flora, fauna, or geological and landform features. They are the finest spots for nature in Britain and are legally protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and therefore any access is strictly prohibited. And with regard to the roads, we're sorry to hear your drive was stressful. The roads in this area are typical of rural North Cumbria and while they offer great scenery they can be quite narrow which can be a challenge for larger camper vans, especially when other road users are in a hurry. We appreciate the heads up for other van drivers and we will look into adding more specific driving tips to our listing to help future van owners feel more prepared. We hope that despite the drive, you were able to enjoy the peace and scenery once you arrived.

Mi è piaciuto Plenty of space to pitch in a good spot. The owner was very approachable, made sure we were okay and had enough fire wood ect. Toilets were clean and well looked after.

Mi è piaciuto I can't believe you can charge this much for an empty field. They must be making a fortune from this. Not even drinking water on site!!! Granted the views and scenery are amazing, but the toilets were like festival toilets, disgusting!! No drinking water is outrageous.

Dal gestore: We're sorry you didn't enjoy your stay with us this weekend. As a pop up campsite our listing states we are "a peaceful off grid spot for wild camping" and also states "simple facilities extend to unisex portable toilets, a water source (not for drinking water) and rubbish bins".
To address your comments about no drinking water on site there is no mains water in the hamlet of Orthwaite and all the properties there are spring fed. When you are greeted on site this is explained and we always check if anyone requires drinking water, which is provided free of charge if needed.
With regard to the toilets, as a pop up site we are not permitted to have a permanent toilet block and therefore have to have portaloos. The toilets are checked, cleaned and re-stocked a minimum of three times each day and unfortunately two of them had been well used between cleans from Saturday night to Sunday morning. Our apologies you encountered one of the well used units but there were six others available that were clean and tidy. We endeavour to keep the portaloos as clean and fresh as we can but unfortunately we are not able to be on site 24/7.

Mi è piaciuto Lovely views. very wecoming OWNERS. and very very helpful to all them .who were stuck in field. (In Storm David) The Farmer didnt waste his time, getting them out who were stuck.
