With ancient woodlands, stunning walking paths and a total of 30 castles, parks, gardens and manor houses, no wonder the High Weald National Landscape is on your radar. The final piece to putting together your getaway in the High Weald might just be Furnace Brook Farm and Fishery, home to a gorgeous adults-only shepherd’s hut. Overlooking a peaceful five-acre lake, this is the sort of place where it’s easy to get some proper R&R. The shepherd’s hut is part of a rural 20-acre wildlife haven where biodiversity is central; the folk here are helping to restore the surrounding protected landscape. When you’re in the spirit for a stroll, trace the east side of the lake up to Batsford Hollow, a spot that really shows just how much of a wildlife haven this place is. The shepherd's hut has two outdoor spaces – the first a spacious timber deck within the tree canopy and the second a lakeside pontoon suited to sitting with a good book or sketchbook and watching the kingfishers and other birds fly past. If you’re ever in need of refreshments to crack open for these sessions, Furnace Brook also has its own microbrewery with local beer – cheers to that. You're welcome to go swimming or paddleboarding (using your own equipment) on the main lake, just as long as you sign the disclaimer provided after you book your stay.

A aimé : AMAZING. IDYLLIC. MAGICAL. What a hidden gem this place is. We have been camping/glamping in many locations but nothing will ever measure up to the experience at Furnace Brook. We booked to stay for a relaxing, quiet break, disconnected from technology, surrounded by nature with fishing outside the accommodation. We got everything we wanted and so much more than we were expecting. We certainly recharged our batteries while staying here. A wonderful place for wellbeing, which is at the root of what the hosts are trying to provide.
Driving out into the countryside away from the hustle and bustle felt like going deeper and deeper into nature. We were greeted by two deer as we drove down the lane to the fishery.
From initial enquiries throughout the whole stay, nothing was too much trouble for our lovely hosts Alistair, Diane and Kellie, who were friendly and extremely informative about the local area and the history of the fishery.
Alistair met us at reception and ferried our belongings to the shepherd’s hut/tree house in a golf cart which was super quiet.
The accommodation was nestled among the trees by a lake with its own fishing peg. It was completely secluded. The hut has everything you need in the kitchen, an extremely comfy bed and bean bag sofa in the bedroom. There are chairs and a swing seat to sit outside on the veranda overlooking the lake.
The shower and toilet are in a hut next to the accommodation.
Alistair showed us the dome room and the little “village” of huts near the accommodation that we were able to explore on our strolls around the lake. Also there was a group kitchen area/event shelter complete with hay bails to sit on.
I was absolutely speechless, which is saying something for me.
We sat smiling all evening as the night drew in. We stayed up late into the night, sitting on the veranda, enjoying a complimentary ale from our host Diane’s own brewery on-site, listening to the sounds of nature around us and no noise pollution.
We saw so much wildlife including (but not restricted to) bats, deer, woodpeckers, heron, kingfishers, ducks and a pair of resident geese.
The whole break continued in this vein. The local pubs were great and we had some particularly fabulous food at the Ash Tree Inn as recommended by our hosts. We were not disappointed. Lovely local people.
There is a village store nearby and supermarkets in Hailsham which is a 10-15 min drive.
The village store had some amazing food that you might expect in a farm shop.
We ended up booking an extra day as we really did not want to leave.
We also took plenty of Diane’s delicious ale (brewed on site) to enjoy when we got home.
We will return.

Attractions à proximité

Whether you’re into walks, castles, coastal walks or towns with proper seaside atmospheres, this is the spot for it. Back in the 19th century, folks would flock to the hotels in Eastbourne (half an hour) for a break by the sea. Remnants of this time remain, including the 19th-century pier and 1930s bandstand. Before you get caught up in the atmosphere, remember that just along the coast are the chalky Seven Sisters (35 minutes) and Beachy Head (40 minutes). You’ve likely heard of the 1066 Battle of Hastings. Battle Abbey (20 minutes) is where this took place; there’s a battlefield trail here to learn a bit more, as well as an annual re-enactment in October. You may as well see Hastings (35 minutes) while you’re at it, with its ruined Norman castle, shipwreck museum and beach. For those thirsty for more history, that leaves Herstmonceux Castle (15 minutes), a 300-acre estate and brick castle with gardens for stunning strolls, and Bodiam Castle (half an hour), a 14th-century moated castle with a nice little tearoom over the river Rother. The National Trust’s Bateman's (15 minutes) also has lots of nature; the 17th-century house, once home to Rudyard Kipling, has 300 acres of countryside and a working watermill.
