In a sprawling public park in Paraná State, on the banks of the Várzea river and within an easy stroll of the spectacular Saltinho waterfall is the family-friendly Recanto Saltinho. This well-placed site within the park with which it shares its name is just 15 minutes’ drive from the small settlement of Tijucas do Sul. There’s plenty to keep guests occupied hereabouts without even having to leave the park, so get started with strolls along nature trails, rambles to the 20-metre-high and 50-metre-wide falls, visits to the gnome garden, and swims in the river or at the kids’ pool. Prefer a more leisurely time? Opt instead for picnics by the water or in one of the many green and leafy spots around the park, or prep food for outdoor eats by setting up at one of the barbecue areas or stirring something up in the communal kitchen. During high season, settle in indoors with the restaurant’s signature dish, chapeado – guests’ choice of meat, served with veg and other sides – while soaking up views over the falls. After long days of explores, wind down for the evening with a hot shower before retreating to pitches. Depending on how much mingling appeals, guests can decide to set up next to the rest of the tents or seek out a more secluded spot.

A small fishing area on site should whet appetites for days spent angling for a good catch – appetites that can then be more fully satisfied with rod and reel 45 minutes’ drive away at Vossoroca Dam. Not much of a fisher? Turn instead towards more urban pursuits with a trip to the city of Curitiba, an hour and 25 minutes from base. There’s plenty here to entertain the whole family, including sprawling botanical gardens, a zoo, a waterpark, football stadiums, parks, activity centres, and a host of museums focusing on everything from automobiles to the Holocaust. For those who favour nature-filled days over bustling city streets, it’s an hour and 45 minutes to Monge State Park (for waterfalls, hiking trails and a pilgrimage to a monks’ former cave dwelling) and an hour and 50 minutes to Recanti dos Papagaios, where hours can be spent (hopefully) in the company of colourful parrots. Those who would like to set eyes on the sea during hols should make tracks to the small coastal city of Guaratuba, an hour and 40 minutes away, where guests can have their choice of sandy beaches.
