Take to the trails of Urbasa-Andia Natural Park or Aralar Natural Park, both of which are about a 10-minute drive away and have stuck up plenty of signposts to keep you on the prescribed path. Local activity centres can also help you saddle up to see the scenery from horseback or fling yourself from a mountainside in a paraglider. For those that prefer underground adventures, the Mendukilo caves are 25 minutes away by car. Back down at ground level, get that real rural vibe at Albi Gaztak (five minutes’ drive), where you can tour the cheese factory, sample its wares and watch sheepdog demonstrations. And what goes well with cheese? Why, wine of course – seek out a bottle to sip with your fine morsels at organic Bodegas Lezaun (35 minutes). Ready for a bit of city action? Pop over to Pamplona with half an hour’s drive, or set forth for the seaside city of San Sebastián, an hour away, for sandy beaches, boat trips, arty galleries and foodie treats picking at pinxtos in the bars.
