Vawidi Roma Nettuno

Overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, Nettuno (10 minutes’ drive) was once the favoured summertime retreat of Roman emperors. Today this trendy little town is dotted with ancient ruins, as well as medieval alleys packed with bars and restaurants. There’s also a yacht marina to check out and a choice of beaches for the kids. Long known as the City of Eternal Love, romantic Rome (an hour and 10 minutes) makes a smashing day trip, for forays into classy shops or a mooch around the treasures in the Vatican Museums (booking ahead is advised). You can unveil your inner gladiator in the Colosseum, make a wish at the fanciful Trevi Fountain and then settle down to a glass of something sparkly in a cobbled piazza. Back down on the coast, treat the kids to dolphin shows at Zoomarine (40 minutes) or soft play sessions at Games Wonderland Park (10 minutes).
