Give yourself a treat with a holiday in Givrand. And at Domaine de Beaulieu for added treatness – this former farm is in a protected natural area in Pays de la Loire countryside, and is a piffling two kilometres from the beach at Bretignolles-sur-Mer. The famed Vendée seaside towns of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez and Saint Gilles Croix de Vie are each within 10 minutes' drive. Those aiming for idle hours on site will appreciate the big pitches here, most under the shade of mature trees and all separated by hedges or bushes for maximum shade and privacy. There are seven hectares of grounds to roam too, as well as a roomy and sandy play area for the kids, and sporty options for all including basketball, tennis and miniature golf. Kids' clubs and activities and entertainment for all ages run in summer. The highlight of the park (time to see the pics) is most def the sizeable outdoor waterpark, which comes with a main pool, kids' pool, Jacuzzi and slides aplenty for whizzing down. There's an indoor pool too, also with accompanying addition for enfants; both pools have stretching-out space on sun loungers alongside. Traditional Vendée cuisine is dished up in the restaurant and the likes of pizza, paninis and chicken and chips at the snack bar. Wend your way to the bar for cocktails and coffee (and a session or two of table football or billiards) – and for everything else, the shop sells groceries, fresh bread, croissants and summer bits and bobs like beach games and suncream.

Bretignolles-sur-Mer, Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez and Saint Gilles Croix de Vie have enough going on to keep you happily occupied for months – after that, there's Les Sables d’Olonne to investigate, and the esteemed isles of Yeu and Noirmoutier. Your nearest beach Bretignolles is quieter than its neighbours, but still has stacks of stuff to do in the summer months: surfing, sailing and kitesurfing are easily accessible if you're feeling waterly active, and bowling, an amusement park and the Vendée Miniature museum if you're not. You can bike to other sandy spots around the coast via the safe and flat cycling paths, or head inland to Commequiers to loop along the old railway velorail. However you get there, make some time in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez for its Atlantic Tobaggan waterpark and L'ile-aux-Jeux play park, then in Saint Gilles to laze on its lengthy beach or take out a boat for a spot of sea fishing. Then hail the ferry to the smashing little island of Yeu/Île d'Yeu – to hike or cycle around its 23 square kilometres via viewpoints, small beaches and the 14th-century castle ruins and towering lighthouse of the rocky south coast.
