Keen on horse riding – or planning to get started with it? You may like to consider booking a break at Les Katbalous, a small and friendly site within an Auvergne equestrian centre.
At this site five minutes’ drive from the village of Sauxillanges you can sign up for lessons, courses and outings with Karine, an instructor with decades of experience. All ages and abilities are catered for, with everything from beginner pony rides for youngsters to more involved skills sessions for experienced riders.
And what if you’re not into riding? Well, this is a peaceful place to stay, with gorgeous views of the Sancy mountains and plenty of animals to meet on site – not just horses but also chickens, ducks, cats and dogs. Well away from any neighbouring houses, it’s a great spot for a quiet break in a rural area (you’ll be in between the Livradois-Forez and Volcans d’Auvergne Regional Natural Parks… so that should give you a hint that this is a scenic area indeed).
Pitches here are on flat ground with easy access for all vehicles, and have access to a water point (with sink) and the dry toilets in the equestrian centre (please note no showers or hot water for guests). Organic breakfast baskets and local meal baskets can be ordered for an extra charge, and there are shops and a market in Sauxillanges or Issoire (10 minutes’ drive).

When you’re not busy with the equestrian activities on site, you can be heading out to explore this scenic area – perhaps seeking out popular spots like Vallée des Saints (35 minutes’ drive) and Chaudefour Valley Nature Reserve (50 minutes) for walks, or heading to Lac Chambon (55 minutes) for a hike followed by a swim from the lake beach. In winter, the ski slopes of Super Besse (55 minutes) provide plenty of activity.
A little closer to home, explore some of the area’s heritage with visits to places like Château de Parentignat (10 minutes), Chateau de Villeneuve-Lembron (25 minutes) and the troglodyte dwellings at Grottes de Perrier (20 minutes) or some time in Issoire (10 minutes), which has a beach area for cooling off after you’ve visited the clock tower and grand Romanesque abbey.
Clermont-Ferrand (40 minutes) is another lovely place to explore – and if you’ve got kids to entertain you may like to consider places like Animal Park Auvergne (35 minutes) or the volcano-themed Vulcania (an hour).
