The area around the site is an undiscovered corner of Croatia, ideal for hikers, bikers and nature lovers happy to explore the forested hills and fields. As the region is rich in wildlife, keep an eye out for deer, foxes and birds of prey. You can also have canoeing and rafting adventures down the rapids on the Mrežnica River (an hour). You can hike to the viewing deck over the spectacular cascade of waterfalls in UNESCO-listed Plitvič National Park (an hour and a half’s drive), or see them from onboard a boat on Kozjak Lake. For something a bit more high octane, you can also see the park from above on a zipwire at Zipline Pazi Medo History buffs could head first to Ribnik Fortress (10 minutes’ drive), a medieval stronghold open for potters around its keep, courtyard and chapel. Other stops on a heritage tour might be the impressive baroque-style Ozalj Castle (25 minutes) and gardens standing over the Kupa River, and the Renaissance and baroque buildings of Karlovac (half an hour), on the confluence of four rivers and centred on a star-shaped fortress.
