  • Peaceful New Forest campsite five minutes' drive from Lyndhurst
  • Beaulieu, Buckler’s Hard and Paultons Park within 20 minutes’ drive
  • Simple woodland pitches with access to waymarked walking trails
Camping out in the forest sound like the kind of outdoor adventure you might like a little bit of? Hampshire's Denny Wood campsite is just the spot for that – it's surrounded by the New Forest National Park (England’s largest ancient woodland), with the shops and restaurants of Lyndhurst only five minutes' drive away when you need them. There's a fabulously remote feeling on the secluded grass pitches here, which sit under trees or on open grassland, amid the natural features of the land – ferns, oaks, fallen trees and the like – for extra peace and privacy. That said, you probably won’t be alone for very long, as there's lots of wildlife around and the campsite is very often frequented by the free-roaming wild ponies of the New Forest. Sitting quietly and taking it all in is an excellent way to spend your time – but so is exploring more widely. Pitch up at Denny Wood and you’ll have direct access to several way-marked routes in the forest straight from your pitch. Get out there exploring the trails on foot or by bike and you'll be taken into a world of heathland, open grassland, rivers and ancient trees – a spectacular backdrop for outdoor adventures, whether you're travelling solo, with your other half or with the family. Denny Wood is intended to give guests a taste of real ‘wild camping’, so it’s worth noting there are no showers or toilets on site; you'll need to bring a chemical toilet with you.

Local attractions

Ponies roam freely around the national park, so you’re likely to spot them sooner or later if you’re quiet enough. They’re wild animals, though, so remember not to get too close – if the kids want to get hands on with animals, there are plenty to meet at Longdown Activity Farm (10 minutes’ drive). Paultons Park, home of Peppa Pig World (20 minutes) is another place to see a collection of animals including penguins, meerkats and snakes (and cartoon pigs…) If you’re on a grownups’ holiday, days out might instead take you to Beaulieu, to visit the Palace House and National Motor Museum, or to Buckler’s Hard to see the village where Nelson’s ships were built and explore reconstructed 18th-century cottage interiors (both 15 minutes). The nearby village of Lyndhurst (five minutes) is worth a stop too, for the New Forest Heritage Centre and bike hire for the local cycle trails. Lymington (25 minutes) is another good town to have on your radar, for boat trips along the river and ferries to the Isle of Wight.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Everything! The poor staff member had to deal with me and my bad luck of my card declining every time and still helped me out. Loved the area so much. The horses seemed to stay round us lots! Was amazing to just sit and watch them. My son was the loudest there this weekend so he was the only noise I had to deal with.

Disliked: Nothing. Wish it had electric but that didn't matter really.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: The Denny Wood site has always been very attractive.
However, there were some signs of neglect regarding the facilities and it was evident that the C&CC were not making investment in the site.
All that has changed.
We witnessed very positive changes. The wardens cabin has been refurbished and now looks very smart. An on-site shop stocking essentials, is a bonus.
The tired barriers around the drinking water supplies have been mended and re-painted and new fire alarm bells have been installed.
All of this, without detracting from the peaceful and tranquil nature of this lovely site.
The fact that the prices have been restored to a realistically low level to encourage visitors to stay for longer, is yet another positive.
We will definitely be back.

Disliked: There is now nothing to detract from the beauty of this little gem of a site.
