Busy weekend on the camping field

Play area for kids aged six and under
An ice-cream van visits at weekends
Free-range hens and geese

Wild camping it may be at Rose Orchards Wild Camping, a pop-up site just outside Barsham village on the Suffolk/Norfolk border, but it’s wild camping that actually comes with quite a few splendid facilities. This is an excellent spot for kids, with a selection of play equipment on a large dedicated field, including slides, sand pits, a rope swing and trampolines. There’s also a basketball hoop, football goal posts and a tyre pyramid. So that’s them sorted (and hopefully tired out for a good sleep later…). Also on site is an honesty shop with cold drinks and fresh eggs – the latter delivered daily by the hens that range freely, along with their pals the ducks and peacocks – and an ice-cream van makes an appearance at the weekend. Other useful facilities include a water tap, washing-up sink and picnic benches for eating outdoors. Fires and barbecues are allowed on the camping field, with firewood, kindling and firelighters available to buy. Anything you need food-wise can be sourced at the local farm shop (five minutes' drive) or the supermarkets in Beccles (10 minutes); and if you’re just not that into alfresco catering, well, you have a choice of pubs and takeaways within 15 minutes by car. Located near the River Waveney, Rose Orchards is only 25 minutes’ drive from the beach at Southwold and it’s also close to all the water-based fun in the Broads National Park.

Me gustó Site was clean (excluding toilets)

No me gustó Unfortunately, our experience here wasn’t what we had hoped for. We found the atmosphere quite uncomfortable, particularly due to the way the owners interacted with us and other campers. There were also quite a few negative comments made about other guests, which didn’t create the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere we would expect from a campsite. I then spoke to the other campers about what had been said about them, to which Rose then decided to also confront me about it too saying how she didn’t expect me to repeat what was said. In my opinion, slating customers to customers isn’t acceptable.

There was an issue involving the children’s play area, particularly the trampoline. There were children trying to play, including my son who was told by the owners’ children that they had to get off because it was “their” play equipment. While the owner did come over and speak to her children saying ‘I understand this is your play area, but you need to share’ it still left me feeling uncomfortable with my child being put in that position in the first place. As paying guests, we would expect the facilities advertised as part of the campsite to be available for all children to enjoy and not as a part of someone’s personal back garden. This felt especially prominent when they sat on a bench and watched all of the campsite until it was getting dark. Leading to an uneasy feeling of being watched and unable to fully relax, only adding to the ‘backyard camping’ vibe.

There was also an honesty box selling eggs on site. Unfortunately, when we cracked one of the eggs we found it was black inside. Obviously I couldn’t say how long the eggs had been there or how they had been stored, but it wasn’t great to find this when the eggs were being sold to campers and could make someone very unwell. The portaloo facilities by the honesty box were the only available toilets, and left much to be desired. Although Rose did attempt to clean them, whenever you tried to flush you also tried not to breathe as the smell was overwhelming. Although we were told as we were leaving someone was coming to empty them, I don’t know when they were cleaned or serviced last as they were obviously HEAVILY used and in need of some serious attention.

We also felt that the photographs online didn’t really reflect the campsite. The setting felt much more like camping in someone’s private garden than the impression we had got from the pictures.

There were also several wasps nests around us, the owners did put some concrete slap pieces over them. Asked if we wanted to move our tent, but it was getting late so I chose to stay where we were.

I get that everyone enjoys different vibes, but It wasn’t a relaxed, comfortable feel. It was a lot smaller than anticipated. I’m glad it was quiet as I probably wouldn’t have stayed if it were busy as it would have been way to cramped for me to enjoy if all the pitches were full. Overall I can’t say I’d recommend this pop up campsite, and will not be returning.

Me gustó As soon as we pulled on to this campsite it had a lovely vibe. It is very small and compacted, where ever you pitch you can watch your children and they are very safe. There are no showers and only portable loo, very clean. This is a wild camping pop up site and we loved it. The couple who run the site are the most friendly and helpful couple and nothing is too much trouble, including feeding the ducks and collecting the eggs, my 6 year old granddaughter had an amazing time and did not want to leave. Would we camp here again....most definitely.

Lugares de interés

You have a choice of riverside strolls direct from the pitches, including one route that takes you through Barsham and along the River Stiffkey. Another scenic walk wends through the scenic Waveney Valley on the Angles Way as it follows the River Waveney through the cute little market town of Bungay (10 minutes’ drive). If you’re keen to go boating, you can hire canoes and paddleboards from Beccles Lido (five minutes) to float down the river. Otherwise, Oulton Broad (25 minutes) is at the southern end of the Broads National Park, with access to day boat hire, dinghy sailing and wingsurfing (an adrenaline-inducing blend of windsurfing and paddleboarding). Turning towards the coast, you can get to lively Southwold in 25 minutes by road, for an afternoon of browsing its upscale boutiques, splashing about in the sea and eating fish and chips on the pier. Lowestoft (half an hour) is another popular seaside resort with golden sands and a pleasant promenade; just north of the town is Pleasurewood Hills Family Theme Park (35 minutes), a surefire hit with the kids for its thrill rides.
