  • Cosy family-run and dog-friendly site in the Cotswolds
  • A 15-minute drive from Blenheim Palace; 25 minutes to Stow-on-the-Wold
  • Barbecues and firepits allowed; access to footpaths and bridleways
After a cosy spot somewhere in the Cotswolds? Historic houses, museums and market towns are out in full force around the cosy Cotswolds Camping in its Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty six miles from Chipping Norton… to be exact, this family-run site is 15 minutes' drive away from Blenheim Palace and within striking distance of many characteristic Cotswolds trails. At the same time, Oxfordshire is the other way and Oxford itself is just 15 minutes’ train journey away from Charlbury Station (five minutes’ drive). As for those of you with a soft spot for a hardcore shopping trip, you won’t be left in the lurch here, as Bicester Village has a shopping outlet 35 minutes’ drive away and Stratford-upon-Avon is 45 minutes’ drive away for handsome riverside scenes and independent shops. Now, how about those hiking shoes? Well, the site has access to fancy footpaths, bridleways and woodland walks, so you’ll be able to get right to the rambling. You might want to stop by the local village, Charlbury, on your way around the local area, as there are food shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants here, all within walking distance of the site. And don’t worry, you’ll be able to carry the good time onto the site, as barbecues and firepits are both permitted – the same for dogs. As for the facilities you’ll have on hand, these include a play area, shower, toilets and a dishwashing area to help you deal with any dirty pots and pans.

What customers say

Great location, friendly staff & clean facilities. Peaceful vibes and good pitches. Some found showers/toilets busy/unclean when full, and a few had hook-up/toilet roll issues. Cafe, bar & live music a bonus.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Location was good for exploring the Cotswolds by car

Site has lots of potential with some investment and thoughtful adjustments for guests

Disliked -Campsite was a bit tired and the amenities were often out of order (blocked toilets)
-Site warden wasn’t very helpful, reached out to gain access to the shop which was listed as open but he said he was too tired to open it. I wasn’t aware guests needed to bring their own toilet roll and had already set up my camper for the evening when I realised, I was travelling solo with kids so was a bit of a pain.
-Bin area was over flowing and smelly close to the cafe area.
-when checking in we weren’t given any information about the site and were kind of left to it.
-The pitches in our field were a bit on top of each other and lacked space even though it wasn’t full. There was a confrontation between two separate guests on the site which was very uncomfortable, with more space this not have happened.

Electric grass tent pitch (large)

Liked The drive home

Disliked We left a day early.

Great location, but an awful camping experience.

We read the reviews before arriving, and brought our own toilet roll. Unfortunately, that was stolen from outside the toilet facilities.

Our pitch was in possibly the worst location on the site—right next to the toilet and washing-up block, the road and the pub. People were walking and driving past throughout the night, and when there was live music at the pub, the guitarist may as well have been lying next to us. We barely slept for the entire stay.

The site rules appeared to mean absolutely nothing. Children were running around the whole campsite until late at night, shouting and using awful language. The rules sent by email might as well be deleted, because they were not enforced at all.

We asked whether we could move pitches but were simply told there was no room. There was no apology or attempt to help, so we ended up leaving a night early.

The facilities were absolutely disgusting. The toilets were dirty, some did not flush, and there was faeces left around them. The showers had hair everywhere and clearly were not being cleaned properly. There was also no hot water available for washing dishes.

The site also needs more staff who are prepared to actively clean, supervise and manage it.

There was nowhere suitable on site to walk the dog either.

The location is convenient for visiting nearby tourist attractions, but that is the only positive I can give. If you are unlucky enough to be placed near the toilets, washing-up area, road or pub, do not expect to sleep.

We would not return and would not recommend staying here.

From the manager: Thanks for your review Jessica ,

I will try and go over some of your points. Every day we take in a whole plethora of customers, some days there's barely any children and some days there's loads. During your stay children were typically off school and on their holidays , which unfortunately does mean a higher amount of children who do tend to make more noise than adults (but not always) Going off this basis at times the campsite is beautifully quiet and peaceful, one day is not a representation of the campsite as a whole.

You were allocated pitch 24 BY PITCHUP which is considered one of the best pitches as you have a picnic bench close by with pergola, its not too far from the facilities and has a nice large hedge separating you from the gravel track. I do distinctly remember you asking me to move pitches but if you refer to the information on our website, it states: Pitchup customers are randomly assigned pitches relating to their booking information and these cannot be changed on arrival.

Now we also do advise our customers to be an extra extension of the warden, if you see someone breaking the rules do not hesitate in texting the warden to inform him. He cannot be everywhere at once, the warden did a walk around at 11pm and advised customers to keep any noise to a minimum. The next day when in the office he saw your email at 10.47pm noting the noise, unfortunately despite his best efforts the emails will not be checked as frequently as text messages or phone calls.

The toilets and showers are deep cleaned between two and three times a day, as much as wed absolutely love to be able to clean up after every customer its practically impossible which is why on the site rules we ask our customers to rinse down showers and try their best to leave the facilities as clean as they've found them. A small burden of responsibility rests upon the customer to do their bit, this frees up the warden to manage the shop , do more patrols, litter pick, check for dog mess, perform light gardening tasks and answer phone calls and texts.

There is also 6 site maps across the site and obviously the one on our website which shows all the facilities, our website states there are 5 washing up sinks, two being cold water and three hot water, if asked the warden could of pointed the hot ones out to you.

Dog walks are found directly next to the campsite , accessible through a small gate one minute away from the campsite entrance, there's another two opposite the campsite behind a layby , 30 seconds from the campsite entrance and then there's four a mere 3 mins drive away situated next to a free to park layby.

This year we added four brand new toilets and a brand new shower block with four more toilets.

Excellent campsite with great facilities.

Electric grass tent pitch (medium)

Liked Loads of great facilities, probably some of the best we've experienced. Food and drinks on site, and we had a singer for one of the evenings.

Disliked We booked a 'large' pitch for a 6-berth tent. We have a Berghaus Air 6 XL and whilst the tent did just about fit in the pitch, there was no room for our car alongside it. Thankfully, some guys opposite us allowed us to park on their spare space.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Lovely cafe/bar good children's play area great location. Helpful staff

Disliked Absolute chaos on checking in on friday with our pitch taken and a while to find another one. Owners blamed pitch up. The shower block towards the back had a major drainage issue and the smell was so bad we couldn't use them. Better showers by reception but quite a walk if pitched at the back. Didn't see any facilities cleaned throughout our stay. No wi fi offered

Stable Barn shepherd's hut (four person)

Liked Clean
Good water supply’s throughout
Quiet
Liked the kettle and toaster being in the hut, would benefit from having a small fridge and cutlery etc added.

Disliked Issues with plumbing - there was a smell when attempting to open toilets near the hut however shut them again and smell went away - had to use toilets near reception.

Not ideal for if you want to go on walks from the site itself with children and dogs as no paths along main roads.

Local attractions

Trail time? You might want to begin with the Roman Fosse Way, passing by the towns of Stow-on-the-Wold (25 minutes' drive) and Moreton-in-Marsh (25 minutes). Or from Lechlade-on-Thames (half an hour), perhaps you'll roll right on to the Thames Path, if you’re not drawn into the water with watersports such as canoeing. Characterful towns and villages are a Cotswolds staple and it shows… Burford (15 minutes) is boxed full of unusual shops, pubs and tea rooms, while in Witney (20 minutes), you’ve got classic entertainment courtesy of a multi-screen cinema, shops and leisure centre mixed in with markets and the historic Cogges Manor Farm. In Woodstock (15 minutes) there’s more history inside The Oxfordshire Museum. Like Chipping Norton (10 minutes), the place has a swimming pool, shops, pubs and tea rooms galore, to add to Chipping Norton’s theatre and cinema. Historic are many of the houses around here, and that includes the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Blenheim Palace (15 minutes), the Jacobean Chastleton House (20 minutes) and or the 18th-century Buscot Park (35 minutes). For more activities in the throw of it all, there’s Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens (25 minutes) and Bourton-on-the-Water’s equestrian centre, brewery and motoring museum (half an hour).
