Local attractions
Wilbur has several stores and eateries as well as an outdoor pool open from Monday to Saturday in summer between 1pm and 6pm. The Big Bend Historical Society Museum exhibits photographs and artefacts from Wilbur's pioneering days, as well as a range of old farming equipment and for artists, the Shaded Heart Artisans Artwork holds events in town.
There's a nine-hole golf course a five-minute drive away, and you can try out quad bikes, drift carts, dirt bikes and other types of off-road vehicle on the dirt-banked oval flat track and low-speed obstacle course at Wilbur Meadows ORV Park.
Half an hour's drive away, Steamboat Rock State Park has hiking and biking trails around the geological peculiarity of the rock, a massive 800-foot high basalt slab rising over Banks Lake. The lake is a popular spot for panfish, rainbow trout and smallmouth bass fishing; while fishing, hiking, canoeing and boating are available at Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area, also half an hour away.
Further off, the Stratford Wildlife Recreation Area and the Sun Lake-Dry Falls State Park (both an hour's drive) have a heady mix of eagles, elk and migrating waterfowl among a landscape of lakes, cliffs and waterfalls.
Don't forget the human endeavours either: check out the Grand Coulee Dam visitor centre to see how this mighty feature was hewn from the mountains, call in on the Colville Tribal Museum to learn about the history and culture of the local indigenous people, and stop for a stroll round the Gehrke Windmill Museum, a collection of upcycled wind features set up in the 1970s and now taking on a folk art existence of their own.
