  • Well-maintained park off Highway 97, five minutes from Oroville
  • On the banks of Lake Osoyoos with views over the water
  • Clubhouse and handy amenities including laundry and free hot showers
On the shores of Lake Osoyoos, just off Highway 97 and oh-so-close to the US-Canada border, the location of Bains' RV Park ticks boxes for both scenic setting and a handy place to bed down. Single night stopovers are a cinch at this Washington park five minutes’ drive north of Oroville: turn off the highway and all has been sorted to make stays straightforward: wide driveways for easy manoeuvres, free wifi, a laundry room and a toilet block with free hot showers. There’s also a smart and clean clubhouse for an evening spent watching TV or playing cards with pals old or new – if you’re not out admiring the lake views, of course... For folk planning to set forth straight away on their two-country travels (or just returning from such adventures), the border is a mile up the road. And for those sticking around for a little longer? There’s much to do in the mountains of the Okanogan Highlands, including hiking, horseback riding, fishing, winery visits and ghost town tours – all finished off with freshwater swims in Lake Osoyoos.

Local attractions

Oroville’s a fine place to base yourselves if you’re in the market for a hike or few – set out on the Similkameen Trail to follow the old railroad bed out of town, or keep binoculars to hand for wildlife-spotting as you wander on the Whistler Canyon Trail, a few miles out of town. The area’s also well served for ATV trails for those who like to get a bit more power behind them as they roam, and there’s a challenging 18-hole golf course 10 minutes’ drive from the park for a somewhat slower-paced way to take in the views. Fishing and boating are both popular pastimes on the local lakes, too. Take a step back from 21st-century life with outings to see the ghost towns at Old Molson (half an hour) or Bodie (an hour) – both well-preserved relics of a bygone era. Or maybe you’d like to get stuck in to the old cowboy ways with trail rides, cattle drives and cookouts at one of the ranches around Republic (an hour and 10 minutes). If all this sounds a bit exhausting, perhaps scoot across the border where there’s a little clutch of wineries a 15-minute drive away.
