Local attractions

If you ever feel the need to leave this peaceful place, head on out to the forest-fringed Quemado Lake (an hour’s drive) to fish for trout and bass, or go exploring on rough tracks around Mangas Mountain (two hours) for spectacular views of surrounding hills and mesas. With picnic areas, a choice of walking trails, and the chance to take photos in the wild landscape, El Malpais National Conservation Area (40 minutes) has dramatic cliffs and canyons as well as like including La Ventana Natural Arch and various dedicated wilderness areas. There are woodland tracks through Gila National Forest (two hours) with statuesque waterfalls to discover, as well as ancient dwellings carved deep into sandstone cliffs. Stop by Zuni Pueblo (an hour) to see the silverware and pottery for which the Zuni people are famous, and drive on to see another extraordinary masterpiece, the sprawling land art completed by Walter De Maria in 1977 – visit “The Lightning Field” (35 minutes) at dusk or sunrise to see it at its best.
