What a spectacularly set western USA park... Hold on to your (cowboy) hat, for there's a whole heap of splendid settings on easy offer from Colorado's wide and spacious Goodnight's Lonesome Dove. Around for over 20 years and based on the film and TV series of the same name, Goodnight’s Lonesome Dove is surrounded by the Rocky Mountains and set in its San Juan range for activities and lazing in cool mountain air. Next, it's also surrounded by the Rio Grande National Forest – all two million whopping acres of it – and is just across the highway from the San Juan River, for long days of fishing, rafting and riverside walks. And yet more… a stay here will also have you close to the famed Wolf Creek Ski Area, on the Wolf Creek Pass between Pagosa Springs and South Fork, and near the championship golf course and fly fishing of the Rio Grande Club & Resort. Horse riding and cycling are also easy to find nearby – and you'll probably already have figured out that this is prime wildlife watching land too... For sinking back and unwinding while you're around: Lonesome Dove has a sauna and a hot tub, as well as a recreation pavilion and a free film library. (Miniature golf, basketball and a playground are around too if you/the kids still have energy left over, and there's also a fish cleaning station and facilities to assist hunters with their game in the autumn.

Local attractions

Months' worth of activities are among the spectacular landscapes around Goodnight's Lonesome Dove's Colorado setting, from mountaineering to old railway rides. The Rockies run for over 3,000 miles from Canada all the way to New Mexico, through landscapes of forest, national parks and lakes popular for outdoor activities like hiking, mountaineering, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, skiing and snowboarding. The scenic rides of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are an option for a gentler afternoon out, running through the San Juan peaks on one of the area's last surviving narrow gauge railroads. A museum is at its main station in Durango. The 4,000 or so Ancestral Puebloan archaeological sites and spectacular scenery of the Mesa Verde National Park are more top options in the area, particularly the 150 rooms of its main structure and giant cliff dwelling Cliff Palace. Other sites recommended by the Lonesome Dove team are the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, the Colorado Gators Reptile Park, the Clear Creek Falls and the displays and equipment of the Creede Underground Mining Museum.
