Imagine you're in California, travelling a long leisurely road, and wearily decide it's high time to pull in for the night… First up, hold that thought, because even if you're tired you're still touring California, and second up, pull in at Lost Hills RV Park, a mere block west of Highway 5 at the 46 interchange. Welcoming travellers of the tired disposition as well as families, groups and folk on short (or longer) breaks, Lost Hills is a big-rig friendly park in Kern County 42 miles from Bakersfield. It's near several museums, about five miles south of the Kern National Wildlife Refuge and close to the spectacular Red Rock Canyon State Park. Numerous facilities are on hand to ensure comfortable stays, including a seasonal outdoor pool, a playground, a horseshoe pit, a dog exercise area and free wifi throughout. The park also has a launderette, toilets and showers, an electric car charging station and propane sales. Restaurants, an RV wash and petrol stations are all conveniently close by.

Local attractions

Horse riding, fishing, hiking, biking and dune buggying are are available around Kern County, along with waterskiing at Lake Buena Vista and Lake Ming, car racing at Famoso, Buttonwillow and Bakersfield, and whitewater rafting, kayaking and skiing at Shirley Meadows and Mount Pinos. A trip to the fab Red Rock Canyon State Park must be had if you're around this part of California, to see (and hike among) its rock formations, buttes and desert cliffs. Its 27,000 or so acres are set along Kern County's State Highway 14, where the south tip of the Sierra Nevada meets the El Paso Mountains; spectacular views of the Californian desert can be seen from many spots. For indoor days and museums, there are the three floors of natural history and anthropology at the Buena Vista Museum of Natural History and Science in Bakersfield; guided tours of the Coso Rock Art District at Maturango Museum in the Indian Wells Valley; the Bakersfield Museum of Art, and Kern County Museum with its Pioneer Village. Back outdoors, take the camera and go to snap some pics at other Kern County landscape spots, including Lake Isabella, Frazier Mountain, the Tejon Pass and Lake Evans.
