  • Wild camping on a working ostrich ranch near Lake Hughes, California
  • Shadowland Foundation 10 minutes’ walk; Castaic Lake 15 minutes’ drive
  • Fire ring, barbecue, ostriches, hayrides and archery on the ranch
It’s not often you get the chance to vacation alongside big birds, so Camping at Quail Run offers something truly unusual – wild camping with simple facilities on a Californian ostrich ranch. Communal amenities on this backcountry site include a fire ring and barbecue, plus restrooms. There’s a playground for the kids to run about in and gardens to meander around, so there's plenty of space – and the ranch owners ask that you are courteous and respectful of each other. There are a few things to bear in mind: please arrive by appointment only, so the owners can show you to your spot and get you settled without endangering the ostriches. For the same reason, dogs are welcomed with prior permission, but must be kept on a leash. Gates are locked at night for the security of the birds. This is wild camping, so there are no electric hook-ups or showers. Due to the wild terrain, no naked flames, please – and note that there are rocky paths to navigate and little shade in some corners of the ranch. Quail Ranch is also a peaceful spot, with strict quiet times between 10pm and 7am, so this is not the spot for party animals.

Local attractions

There’s so much to do and see, you may never get chance to leave the ranch. Pick up souvenirs of your stay at the store, where ostrich oil, feather products, and ostrich eggs are all sold, alongside local raw honey, seasonal produce, artwork, and leatherwork. You can keep everybody entertained with unusual activities on site too: how about archery and tomahawk throwing lessons or hayrides for the kids? If you’re keen to meet the local wildlife, have a hike to the Shadowland Foundation (10 minutes’ walk), a non-profit where you can meet and engage with rescue wolves. There are rare and endangered big cats – including lynx and snow leopards – at the Exotic Feline Breeding Compound (35 minutes’ drive), or you can volunteer as a caregiver for the day at the Gibbon Conservation Center (40 minutes). Eager to get out and about in spectacular Californian landscapes? Castaic Lake State Recreation Area (15 minutes’ drive) has it all: lakes for power-boating, kayaking and sailing; swimming holes; picnic spots; and fishing for trout. Shoreline walks take in views of the dam and the backdrop of craggy mountain peaks.
