  • 160-acre rural campground near Deep Creek Hot Springs
  • Less than two hours' drive from Los Angeles and Palm Springs
  • Dog-friendly campground with picnic tables and fire rings provided
If you want to camp out as close as possible to the Deep Creek Hot Springs, then Deep Creek Hot Springs Campground is the place to do it… In the Juniper Flats area of Southern California, where the San Bernardino Mountains meet the Mojave Desert, the 160-acre homestead property is 35 minutes’ drive outside of Hesperia. The lithium hot spring pools naturally carved out of the canyon’s cliff rocks sit alongside a cool flowing creek less than two miles from the site. People have been making camp here for nearly a century so they can take a hike before soaking in the hot springs – stay overnight and you can be first to take a dip when access to the canyon opens at sunrise. Once you've taken in the spectacular views of mountain and desert landscapes all around, head out to explore the many miles of trails criss-crossing thousands of acres of wildlife-rich land. It's all been managed to maintain the unique mix of plants and animals including the iconic Joshua trees, red-tailed hawks, golden eagles, coyotes and mountain lions. Sitting 4500 ft up in the mountains of the Mojave Desert, 13 miles from the nearest town and convenience stores, this is a place to escape the everyday. There’s cell phone service on the property, but it drops out along most of the six-mile dirt road that leads here, so check directions before you set off. Essential facilities available on site include bathrooms, showers, potable water and wifi. Dogs are welcome and there are picnic tables and barbecue/fire rings to use when you’re back at base after a hard day’s exploring.

Route directions

From the I-15, take the Main Street exit in Hesperia. Drive for approximately seven miles east, then turn left at Rock Springs Road. Continue for three miles, passing the four-way stop at Kiowa until you reach Bowen Ranch Road. Turn right and head south down Bowen Ranch Road for 5.7 miles. The park is located six miles off the paved road, but a four-wheel drive is not necessary. Please note that phone data is lost for the last five miles of driving, so it's a good idea to download directions and a map before setting out.

Please note: All distances on this page are calculated "as the crow flies" - please check actual distance depending on your mode of travel using the Get directions button above.

Local attractions

If such a big expanse of desert trails gets you itching to jump on a dirt bike, there are designated routes to keep you happy all day long. If you prefer taking in the views at a slower pace, search the horseback riding options that can be arranged from Hesperia (35 minutes’ drive) or at ranches nearby. When it’s time to give your hiking boots a break, the California Route 66 Museum in Victorville (40 minutes) is a good pitstop for finding out all about the US’s most famous highway. Or hang out high above the canyons at ziplining centers in the San Gabriel Mountains (an hour and 10 minutes) or Skyforest (an hour and 15 minutes). Animal enthusiasts keen to get up close and personal with the wildlife can take the 50-minute trip to Wolf Mountain Sanctuary in Lucerne Valley or visit Wildhaven Ranch, near Lake Arrowhead (an hour and a half) where you’ll need to pre-book onto one of their tours to be guided round this rehabilitation sanctuary for bears, birds and other indigenous beasts.
