Huge open space

  • Peaceful simple sites at a spacious Arizona campground
  • Grand Canyon National Park half an hour's drive away
  • Spectacular stargazing location with mountain views
If you’re in search of a peaceful experience, clearly you need to take a look at Peaceful Experience Ranch. The clue’s in the name at this quiet Arizona campground, which has an acre of unspoiled land where you can escape from the fast-paced modern world for a little while. There’s no wifi here, no running water, no electricity and no restrooms, so you’ll need to be fairly self-sufficient on the facilities front. You’ll have plenty of space to play with though, so you can set your site up as you want it – the land is nicely flat for tents, gazebos and suchlike, and you can bring portable heaters or fire rings to help you stay warm in the evenings. (Please note that fire rings may not be used in periods of warm, dry weather because of the safety risk.) That sense of ‘nothingness’ is the big draw here – this is a secluded location where you can slow down and focus on simple things, like the stunning mountain views and the fabulous sense of proper peace. Sunsets and sunrises are often spectacular here, giving way to clear, dark skies filled with glittering stars (and no light pollution to interfere with your stargazing experience). When it’s time to venture back into the outside world again (such as when you need fresh supplies), you’ll need to head off to Williams (40 minutes’ drive) or Flagstaff (55 minutes). Closer to home, though, is one of the world’s big attractions – it’s only a half-hour drive from the campground to the Grand Canyon National Park and all its wonderful natural landscapes.

Local attractions

Being so close to the Grand Canyon National Park (half an hour’s drive) means you can make the most of your visit(s), either buying a multi-day pass and going up there several times to explore everything thoroughly or setting off early to beat the crowds and make a full day of it. Guided tours, helicopter flights and other trips can all be organized locally. The Grand Canyon isn’t the only landscape worth seeing around here – less well known but still well worth visiting are places like Walnut Canyon National Monument (an hour), Sunset Crater Volcano and Wupatki National Monument (both an hour and 20 minutes). The area also has rafting trips in summer and skiing options in winter. For family days out, pay a visit to Raptor Ranch (10 minutes), home to Flintstones-themed buildings and colourful model dinosaurs, or take a driving safari at Bearizona Wildlife Park (40 minutes) to see bison, wolves and other native beasts.
