- Wild campground on a family-run Texas farm and homestead
- Corsicana 15 minutes’ drive; Richland-Chambers Reservoir half an hour
- Small country store on site with fire rings for hire; wildlife haven
Wild campers looking for a Texas base between Dallas and Houston should turn their heads at the sound of Starfield Retreat in Richland. A short drive away from Highway 45, this eco wild campground is well away from city noise, packed with wildlife and also regularly graced by starry skies.
Where exactly, you say? The sites are on a working farm and homestead owned by the Hafeez family, who, after buying the 50 acres of wooded land in 2021, have cleared about five acres to set up a barn, horse stall, garden and gathering areas and an RV trailer living space.
The spacious sites are tucked away in a partly sloping field – usually grazed by sheep, horses and other livestock – behind the homestead area. And with the remaining 45 acres left as wilderness, this really is a place to unwind properly. Up to two pets (kept on leads and cleaned up after) are also handily welcome per site.
Among the campground's eco credentials are clean composting restrooms, a washing-up area with hot water, recycling facilities and unmanicured surrounds to support the wildlife. There’s no electricity on the sites, but guests can top up devices and mini coolers using the sockets provided. Skip along to the farm’s small country store for your caffeine fix or to buy handy bits like cold (non-alcoholic) drinks, ice cream, packaged food, sleeping bags and one-gallon water bottles and ice bags.
Conveniently for your evening activities, the farm store rents out one fire ring per site (note you can’t bring your own, nor forage for firewood); the pack includes a stack of logs, kindling, a small starter firestick and matches. Small-scale barbecues or warming food on the fire have the green light, and feel free to bring your own charcoal or purchase the fuel and charcoal from the store.

Local attractions
Texas’s first oil boom town is just north of the site. Corsicana (15 minutes’ drive) has a historic downtown with period memorabilia at the Pioneer Village and American Civil War artefacts kept at the Pearce Collections Museum.
If you like spending time by the water, you’re also in a good spot for it. Navarro Mills Lake (35 minutes) and Richland-Chambers Reservoir (half an hour) are both a short drive away, with the latter proving mightily popular for fishing (including carp, bass and catfish), boating and ‘beach’ days.
Holidays are surely a deserving time to treat yourself to a glass of wine, and handily, the local boutique vineyard and winery (10 minutes) is nice and close by for wine and cheese tasting.
For big cities, turn your head towards Waco (an hour), artsy Dallas (an hour) and Houston (two and a half hours).
