  • Exclusive rent-a-tent wild camping on a ranch near Elgin in Texas
  • A 25-minute drive to Sherwood Forest Faire; half an hour to Austin
  • Farm animals and creekside walks on an eco-friendly camping ground
What do you say to a whole 19 acres of prime Texas ranch land to yourself? At Happy Regenerative Farm, that’s exactly what you can have – and near Elgin, only half an hour from downtown Austin. Your only companions at this sustainable camping spot are likely to be free-range hens, goats, and cows – who will all probably come to say hi as you settle in. You don’t even need to bring a tent, as everything is set up ready and waiting for you, in a peaceful spot by the side of the creek. If you’d like to explore, there are woodland hiking paths across the land – all the better for exercising any canine companions that may be accompanying you. The eco-conscious landowners ask that you do your part in helping to replenish the ranch’s soil by using the composting privacy toilet. Other facilities on site include an up-cycled wooden amenities block and recycling bins – and there’s no electricity so bring a torch for night-time wanderings. And talking of night-time, if you’re quiet on site after dark, you may hear coyotes howling, frogs croaking, and owls hooting – and during the day, sneak down to the pond to try and glimpse the resident blue heron.

Local attractions

To get way out into the fresh air, spend a day on the walking trails in Lake Somerville State Park and Trailway (an hour and five minutes’ drive) – also a good spot for fishing, mountain biking, and horseback riding – or splash around on the floating inflatable course in Lake Bastrop North Shore Park (25 minutes). Time travel backwards with a visit to the photographic collection at Elgin Depot Museum (10 minutes), on the site of a former rail track. Nearby, you can wander around reproductions of Old West saloons and churches at J. Lorraine, TX. Ghost Town Austin (10 minutes). Got the kids in tow? There’s plenty of family fun to be had at Sherwood Forest Faire (25 minutes), a medieval-themed park with jousting tournaments, horse-and-cart rides, and dressing-up opportunities. And despite the peaceful rural setting of this site, it’s actually only half an hour’s drive into Austin, so for a taste of city life you can catch alfresco music festivals in Zilker Park, hang out in the bars and beer gardens around the around the Rainey Street district, or listen to live bands and comedy on 6th Street.
