Local attractions

Lake Marion is one of the top fishing destinations in South Carolina, where you can find striped bass, white perch, white bass, crappie, channel catfish, Arkansas blue catfish, shell crackers and bream. The state fishing record for largemouth bass was set here, and it’s not unusual to catch a 25-pound catfish right off the marina docks. While there is much to keep you on the campground, there’s plenty to see in the local area too. Head into the Santee National Wildlife Refuge (35 minutes’ drive) to follow the Santee Cooper Nature Trail wildlife drive, or canoe through the marshland creeks. Take your binoculars when you explore Pine Island Unit National Wildlife Refuge (half an hour), where you’ll hopefully spy an abundance of herons, egrets and pelicans. And if you all need a rejuvenating rest day, take the family to the sandy beach in Indian Bluff Recreation Park (10 minutes), where you can swim in pristine water, take boat trips around Lake Marion and picnic among the trees.
