In desperate need of a holiday that gets you back to nature? You’ll be breathing easier at Lake Bryant Resort, a friendly spot less than five minutes’ drive from the town of Ocklawaha in Florida.
Lake Bryant is a prime base for outdoor pursuits. Start with the lake itself and the 1,000 feet of white sandy beach between you and the water – soak up the sun, swim in the water, try out some watersports or bring your boat along to chug along on the lake surface and go fishing (there’s a boat ramp at Lake Bryant, so no need to worry about logistics).
For nature-filled goodness, you won’t have to go far: Lake Bryant is in Ocala National Forest, where there’s plenty to keep you busy (a scenic hiking trail (one of many) three miles away, exploring on horseback or ATV, following the 66-mile long four-wheeling trail nearby), and Silver Springs State Park is 20 minutes’ drive away – head there for botanic gardens, cruises along rivers in glass-bottomed boats and wildlife shows.
When you’re tuckered out from all your adventuring, make your way back to base to fire up a barbecue in the picnic area (pile it high with supplies from the stores about 10 minutes away) or venture out to one of the restaurants within half an hour, then kick back next to the campfire for the evening.

Local attractions
Just over an hour from Lake Bryant Resort, Daytona Beach is a prime spot for family adventures: spend an afternoon at Daytona Lagoon waterpark, go horseback riding along the beach, or head straight for the Daytona International Speedway for the world-famous Daytona 500 (or one of its other high-speed events).
Get your own taste of adrenaline in Orlando, an hour and a half away. They call it the ‘theme park capital of the world’ for a reason and you’re definitely going to want to spend a day (or two, or three) visiting the city. Make a beeline for the rides at Disney World, Universal Studios, Legoland and Busch Gardens, then sit tank-side and meet the animals at SeaWorld – and that’s just for starters.
If ‘coasters and killer whales (they’re orcas, really, but alliteration…) don’t float your boat, go to Orlando anyway for a poke around the science centre, Madame Tussauds, the Harry P Leu botanic gardens and oodles of shops.
Closer to home base, there’s tons to keep you around: fans of the vino should slip (sip?) to Dragon Flower Winery for tastings, equestrian-types can sign up for a tour of the stables at Gypsy Gold Farm, and those who haven’t fulfilled their need for speed simply have to zoom over to Don Garlit’s Museum of Drag Racing.
