- Wild camping on a Florida eco-farm 25 minutes’ drive from Ocala
- Juniper Springs half an hour’s drive; Carney Island beach 15 minutes
- Sites in an oak forest; exercise and meditation classes available
Need to get away from modern-day pressures and have a proper back-to-nature camping experience? Perhaps you’d like to escape to JAI Jungle of Permaculture, a farm run on sustainable grounds 25 minutes’ drive from Ocala in North Central Florida. Here the sites are scattered under a canopy of oak trees in five acres of a permaculture forest.
The list of facilities is short (this is wild camping after all). Drinking water is available, as well as a basic outdoor shower. While there are no electric hook-ups, you do have access to charging points for your devices and electric vehicles.
There are woodland trails to explore on foot – you might get lucky and and catch sight of hawks, owls, woodpeckers and turtles as you walk – and after dark, you can see stars blazing almost every night. You can also take exercise classes and guided meditations, let the kids jump around on the trampoline, swim in the small pool, or simply enjoy the peace and quiet.
Should you need to venture out, local facilities include a grocery store and small supermarket within 10 minutes’ walk, and Lake Weir beach bars less than 10 minutes’ drive away.
A couple of basic rules: please keep your dogs on a leash, always clean up after them – and take all your garbage home with you. You’re welcome to spark up a campfire but please burn wood only; play music with respect for your fellow guests and be quiet after dark.
