  • Simple sites on a 39-acre Florida horse farm near Williston
  • Events and shows at World Equestrian Center 40 minutes' drive away
  • Next to Goethe State Forest for horse riding; dogs welcome
Keen on dogs and horses? Then you'll be in your element at Big Oak Dog and Horse Camping, where you’ll be staying on a 39-acre horse farm just outside Florida's Goethe State Forest. There are lots of lovely animals to meet while you're on the farm – and with the forest pretty much next door you’re also likely to see a few wild animals too. There are many miles of trails running through the forest (don't miss the ancient cypress known as the Goethe Giant), and several other nature reserves nearby – including Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve, Gulf Hammock State Wildlife Management Area and Crystal River Archaeological State Park. Dogs are welcome to stay with you at this campground, of course, and once you've met the farm horses you'll be able to head out to the World Equestrian Center (40 minutes' drive) to check out events at the largest equestrian center on the planet, or head out on rides from the local riding center (five minutes away). Snorkelling, swimming and garden wanders are all available nearby for a change of pace (or activities for non-riders). Your farm base is a simple place to stay, with heaps of peaceful space to relax in, but minimal facilities. You’ll need to be travelling in a self-contained tourer here as there are no restrooms or showers; there is, however, a chemical disposal point. As a laidback kind of place, barbecues and campfires are permitted; pick up all the supplies you need in Williston (15 minutes).

Local attractions

If it's the horses that entice you to this spot, you'll definitely want to spend some time out on the trails of Goethe State Forest – the equestrian center at Black Prong Resort (five minutes' drive) has trail rides for all abilities from beginners to experts, along with carriage rides that are particularly lovely for families with younger kids. You'll also want to see what's on at the World Equestrian Center (40 minutes) – show jumping and various performances are on the schedule alongside things like food and wine festivals. It can get pretty warm in Florida, so you may like to plan a couple of water activities too. There's some incredible snorkeling and diving in the underground caves at Devil's Den Prehistoric Spring (15 minutes) and cool spring water to swim in at Blue Springs Park (15 minutes). Rainbow Springs (35 minutes) has swimming and kayaking, and you can see coastal habitats at Crystal Rover Archaeological State Park (35 minutes). For a chilled outing, head to the colorful Cedar Lakes Woods and Gardens (15 minutes); for something livelier see if you can catch a Florida Gators game at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium (45 minutes).
