If you would like to explore the Finger Lakes region and don’t mind channeling a little pioneering spirit, Valley View Camp might well be the place for you. This campground in Montour Falls, rural New York State, sits three miles from Watkins Glen and the southern edge of Seneca Lake. Valley View Camp is centered around an open pasture where tents are set up about 50 yards apart. You’ll have access to fire rings and benches; in addition, basic tools and firewood are supplied (please be considerate in your use of both). Facilities, which include a toilet cabin, a changing area and a camp shower, might be on the spartan side, but what there is no shortage of here is peace and quiet – not to mention scenic views over the Montour Falls, down in the valley. The nearby Catherine Creek Wildlife Management Area (five minutes’ drive) is great for fishing and hiking, while Havana Glen, a short hike with a waterfall and a swimming hole at the top, is roughly a mile from base. The park is in a rural area, so you have a pretty good chance of seeing deer, hawks, and lots of other wildlife, and the night sky should be dark enough for splendid stargazing on clear evenings. The town of Montour Falls (a short drive or a 25-minute walk) has bars, restaurants and places to buy food; it also has a cycling trail.

Primitive grass and gravel tent, travel trailer or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Nothing!!!

Disliked: Grass was tall and restroom disgusting!!! I left and looked for another camp site! Most of the fire pits had grass growing on them. No wonder their was nobody else.

From the manager: I list as a primitive camp site. I price it at a low cost. I went there soon after your complaint, the port a potty is just that. I saw a cob web, I saw 2 used toilet paper rolls left there. Take the feather duster and add 30 seconds of effort. Anything you see in a port a potty at any of my places is the result of campers being a slob. and inconsiderate. Wondering if it was your group that left trash, beer cans, stole my supplies and fit pit tools? If you come or not, I don't care. My land has been treated poorly by A FEW, I list as primitive for the camper who is okay with ruffing it. I would suggest to County or State camp ground as accept their space, rules and prices. Most guest, and I've meet many a good off grid campers I know and like. Best of luck at your next State campsite.

Primitive grass and gravel tent, travel trailer or trailer tent campsite

Liked: I had a great time, the view was amazing! We were the only ones there but I see why, it was -29c at night! What a great camp site! Minute or two from town if you needed to go get anything but nice and quiet. I camped with my 20 year old son in a hot tent with wood stove and we were super comfortable. We had a nice outdoor firepit for cooking too.

Watkins Glen International Speedway (10 minutes’ drive) used to be the home of the United States Formula One Grand Prix. These days, it hosts NASCAR races, which ought to make the car fanatics in your party pretty happy. What’s more, they can drive three laps around the circuit (in their own vehicle) as part of the ‘Drive the Glen’ experience. Finger Lakes National Forest (20 minutes) spreads across 16,000 acres of woodlands, grasslands and pastures, and it is a popular spot for hiking and horseback riding. As you walk or ride along its trails, keep your eyes peeled for kestrels and goshawks, plus deer and beavers. Stretching at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake, Ithaca (30 minutes) is known as the home of Cornell University. Its leafy campus includes the Cornell Botanic Gardens and the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, in a striking concrete building overlooking Fall Creek.
