It's free, quick and easy!
- Scenic and family-friendly park on 220 acres of land with a large lake
- A 10-minute drive from Wellington and an hour from Cleveland
- Fishing, boating, sandy lake beach and live entertainment
If you’re chugging along between Columbus and Cleveland, make a pitstop at Claremar Twin Lakes Camping Resort for a stay at a newly renovated and dog-friendly park spread out over a scenic – and sizable – parcel of land. All in all, there are 220 acres to amble around here, with the highlight being a lovely 70-acre lake edged by a sandy beach…
Kids can take part in bucket-and-spade sessions (when they’re not making the most of the waterslides and splash pad), and fishing and boating are to be had on the water during relaxed days on base. There are all sorts of other weekend activities and live entertainment organised for every age here too.
If you can drag the family away from the above, Wellington has a handful of historical buildings to take a look at and is near nature-rich areas like Findley State Park (10 minutes’ drive) and the Caley National Wildlife Woods (20 minutes).
Post-wanders in wildlife-filled areas, meals are easy to source in the restaurants of downtown Wellington (10 minutes) and food is served up back on base too. Doing dinner DIY style? Barbecues and campfires are allowed at this park, so evenings can be spent getting eats going on the grill.

Local attractions
Perhaps you’re planning on timing your visit for some of the annual events held in this area? The Lorain County Fair (15 minutes’ drive), an agricultural festival with organised entertainment, tractor pulls, demo derbies, horse racing and live animal shows, happens in August, while the Ohio Scottish Games – a celebration of the country’s heritage – puts on Scottish art and music shows in June.
If you won’t be here during those months, there’s still much to do in the region. Head to Caley Reserve (20 minutes’ drive) for wanders around a wetland habitat full of waterfowl including migratory dabbling ducks or get closer to animals during a trip to Bonnie Brae Farms (five minutes), which allows visitors to ride and feed the elk.
Another prime place for a visit is Findlay State Park, a forested area with hiking and mountain trails, plus a boating lake for days on the water.
Fancy a look at a larger body of water? One of the Great Lakes, Erie, is about an hour’s drive from the park and Cleveland is about the same distance for city trips to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Museum of Art and the Metroparks Zoo.
