  • Bedouin-style encampment on the edge of Sabria in the Tunisian Sahara
  • Desert activities include sandboarding, quad biking and stargazing
  • Traditional tents and a restaurant in the middle of desert landscapes
When you’re looking to up the ante on the location front, Dunes Insolites may be the very place for you. Set deep in the Tunisian Sahara on the outskirts of Sabria and 40 minutes’ drive south of Douz, this site is in a spectacularly scenic spot with comfortable accommodation surrounded by ever-shifting golden dunes of the desert – and a million dancing stars in the skies on clear nights. The family-friendly tents here all have proper beds (all linens provided), traditional Berber rugs and solar-powered lighting. Ornate lamps light the track to the tents after dark, and hot showers are available too. A stay includes a typical Bedouin dinner served in a tent, occasional entertainment and breakfast at sunrise overlooking the sand; the site also has a campfire, a rest area with mats and cushions, and a chillout zone where you can relax with shisha pipes after a day exploring the desert. Transport by air-conditioned vehicle is available from all over Tunisia, but the site is also easily accessible by car without the need for a four-wheel drive.

Local attractions

You can try all manner of activities when staying at Dunes Insolites. Discover the Tunisian desert on a camel ride across the dunes, travelling at the pace of traditional nomadic Bedouin caravans, or raise the speed somewhat with thrilling quad bike rides bumping over the dunes or four-wheel drive excursions to hidden oases, archaeological sites and ancient ruins. The camp’s tour guides can also take you on fast-paced sandboarding adventures down steep dunes. Alternatively, you can learn how to make local ‘khobz el mella’ bread on hot coals buried in the sand, or spend the night in a desert bivouac with just the stars for company – see how constellations you can spot when you’re far away from any artificial light (they’re especially bright in summer). The local town of Sabria (10 minutes’ drive) has a scattering of cafés and shops, plus a centuries-old fort currently undergoing restoration.
