- Back-to-basics woodland campsite 25 minutes’ drive from Nefza
- A 40-minute drive to Barkoukech beach; 50 to the Aiguilles of Tabarka
- Hiking, yoga, archery and kayaking available; regional food provided
Set 2,300 feet above sea level in a clearing amid mature forest, a stay at MSID Outdoors campsite is all about combining pristine nature with visits to Tunisian cultural hotspots. There’s a remote vibe about the place, yet you’re only 25 minutes’ drive from restaurants, cafés and shops in the rural town of Nefza.
Facilities at this nearly wild campsite are pretty basic – there’s no electricity and only limited toilet facilities – but you’ll certainly never starve, as chefs conjure up tasty dishes around the campfire using the best of local ingredients.
You’ll never be short of something to do either. Small groups, friends or solo travellers are welcome to take their pick among the activities on offer, carefully curated to appeal to all ages and fitness levels. You can hike forest trails with experienced guides, book archery lessons, practise yoga or set out to explore Lake Sidi Barrak by kayak.
And if you prefer to spend your time visiting towns known for their architectural heritage? Take a day trip to the sprawling Roman remains at Dougga (two hours), or admire the Moorish architecture in the Old Town at Testour (90 minutes).

Local attractions
Get the walking boots on and hike to the waterfalls in Reserve Jbel Khroufa (35 minutes’ drive), or take a stroll around the side of Lake Sidi Barrak in Parc Boulehia (25 minutes).
For a day at the beach, head to Zouaraa (half an hour) for canoeing along the shoreline, fishing and dining on fresh seafood, or – if you’re lucky – you may have the soft sand of Plage WMB (40 minutes) pretty much all to yourself. Spot the bizarre pointy Aiguilles rock formations in the seaside resort of Tabarka (50 minutes), also known for its annual July jazz festival and the ruins of the Antica Tabarka Genovese guarding the town on a headland.
Turning inland, Sejnane (45 minutes) is the production centre of terracotta cooking utensils, dolls and animal figurines made by the women of the town. And for more local history, you can see the remnants of a Roman villa at Ruines d’es Smadhia (45 minutes), while there are Byzantine towers still standing at the crumbling Forteresse Byzantine de Ksar Zaga (half an hour).
