- Campground five minutes’ walk from the ferry and 15 from Ufilae beach
- Fangatave Cliffs 10 minutes’ drive and ʻEua National Park 20 minutes
- Grass sites shaded by palm trees and a communal alfresco kitchenette
Well. What a place. Pitch A Tent has pole position on ‘Ohonua village waterfront in the north-west corner of Tonga’s island of ‘Eua. Here you can pitch your tent under the shade of swaying palm trees, chill in the sun and then head down to gorgeous Ufilae beach (15 minutes’ walk) to dip your toes in the warm waters of the ocean.
Just five minutes’ stroll from the ferry dock (it’s three hours by boat from the main island), the campsite is an affordable option for anyone wanting to bask in tropical sunshine without breaking the bank. With a backdrop of rainforest and jungle-covered peaks, the grass camping field is within sight of the ocean, and you can enjoy colourful sunsets from your tent on clear days before falling asleep to the sound of crashing waves.
Should you ever want to move from this enchanted spot, you can rent bikes to explore the island, and site staff members can help organise wildlife tours and rock-climbing days.
On a practical note, facilities include shared shower blocks and a well-equipped kitchenette tent.

Local attractions
‘Eua Island is something of a Tongan hub for rock climbing; experts can scale the steep limestone cliffs at Fangatave on the east coast (10 minutes’ drive), or explore the complex of caves bedded into the cliffside. Less adventurous souls may prefer to lounge happily on Fangatave Beach (15 minutes), or lazily swim over the coral reef to see which tropical fish they can spot.
The island is also renowned for the annual migration of humpback whales between June and November; you can book small-group tours locally that go whale-watching and give you the chance to swim with these mighty mammals of the sea in carefully controlled and safe surroundings.
Venturing to the south of ‘Eua, take guided walks through pristine rainforest to tumbling waterfalls in ʻEua National Park (20 minutes), all the while listening out for the indigenous red-breasted musk parrot. The bizarre Rock Garden Coral Formations (25 minutes) carved by the power of the sea over millennia; if you’re lucky you might also get to see the island’s wild horses grazing nearby.
