  • Dog-friendly high-altitude site on the Jaun Pass, western Switzerland
  • Bulle Gruyère Museum and Library 40 minutes’ drive; Spiez one hour
  • Spectacular alpine views; direct access to cross-country skiing trails
Whether you’re into cross-country skiing or hiking with your canine companion, a cosy caravan in the Swiss Alps sounds like a top spot for a mountain holiday. Jaunpass Glamping is that top spot. Be aware that the word ‘top’ in this instance also refers to the altitude of the site: at 1,520 metres above sea level, on the Jaun Pass, in the west of the country. This remote site comes with spectacular views of the Simmen Valley and the Gastlosen mountain range, plus a blissfully peaceful ambience. Best of all, the Sportbahnen Jaunpass activity area is only five minutes’ walk away. From there you can access cross-country ski trails, or book skiing or snowboarding lessons with seasoned instructors. Alternatively, head in the opposite direction to reach a couple of observation decks with stunning alpine panoramas. In the summer, forested trails such as the one leading to the Oberenegg ridge (a one-hour walk) are popular with hikers and mountain bikers, or you can ride the Jaun-Gastlosen Bergbahnen cable car (10 minutes’ drive) to the mountain station and come back down by scooter. Whatever you do, you’ll be surrounded by rugged limestone peaks and fir-covered hillsides. After all that activity, your stomach might be rumbling. Good news: there’s a cheese shop less than half a kilometre away; for things besides dairy products, you’ll have to go into Boltigen (15 minutes) or Zweisimmen (20 minutes). If you want someone else to take care of dinner, the nearest restaurant is a 10-minute walk away, with another couple of dining options along the Jaunpass (10 minutes’ drive).

Local attractions

Take a stroll through the pretty village of Jaun (10 minutes’ drive), in a valley surrounded by tree-covered slopes. Along one of those hills runs a dramatic waterfall, or you can climb up to the Burgruine Bellegarde castle ruins for views of the area. At the Bulle Gruyère Museum and Library (40 minutes), you can learn all there is to know about the famed Swiss cheese – and much more besides, including regional traditions, folk art and local farming practices. A 10-minute drive to the east leads to Lake Gruyère and Morlon Plage beach, where you can swim or paddleboard. Spiez (one hour) sits on the banks of the Thunersee lake, which you can cross by ferry or admire from the tower of the medieval Schloss Spiez. The castle is also home to a museum with recreated contemporary settings, such as a bustling kitchen where a banquet is being prepared.
