The fine people at Natura Resorts have come up with a pretty decent holiday concept, and that’s a site that brings together accommodation, gastronomy and wine tourism – the resort sits in the Rioja Alta wine region, after all, so it would be churlish not to make the most of those vineyard-covered hillsides and cellars full of vinous treasures. Modern luxury bungalows with a sheltered terrace and a fully equipped kitchen (plus a miniature cellar of Rioja wines) occupy a vast area of level countryside just outside the town of Casalarreina (five minutes’ drive along the evocatively named Avenida de la Rioja). As comfortable and well-equipped as the bungalows are, though (and they are), chances are the on-site facilities will soon draw you out into the open, whether it’s to take your canine buddy for a run in the dog park, play a game of tennis or swim a few laps in the pool while the kids splash around in the toddlers’ area. Young guests can also choose to spend time in the playground or the games room, or to join in the activities arranged by the kids’ club. It’s possible to hire bikes, too, and explore the surrounding countryside with the hope, perhaps, of stumbling upon a welcoming winery… The on-site restaurant, Otium, serves elegant dishes that feature local vegetables and meats in an airy dining room, while the wine cellar next door pairs gorgeous regional wines with casual tapas.

Local attractions

In Haro (10 minutes’ drive), the Barrio de la Estación is home to six of the most renowned wineries in Rioja, including CVNE and Bodegas Muga. Guided tours need to be booked in advance, but most of the bodegas have at least a wine bar (some have a shop, too) that you can visit on a whim. The area around Calle del Laurel in Logroño (35 minutes) is tapas central, with dozens of bars serving small, delicious bites of Iberico ham, bocadillo sandwiches, tortilla and more. The Museum of La Rioja illustrates the history of the region from ancient times to the present. Burgos (55 minutes) has a medieval town centre that spreads around an imposing Gothic cathedral where the 11th-century Spanish warrior hero El Cid is buried. There are excellent views of the cathedral and the town from the Mirador del Castillo observation deck, and shaded walks along the river Arlanzón in Parque de La Isla.
