  • Glamping at an astronomy-oriented hotel in Tenerife's Vilaflor
  • Next to Teide National Park, half an hour's drive from Mount Teide
  • Clear-roofed pods and nightly sunset/stargazing trips
It’s a wise idea to hone your siesta technique if you’re planning a stay at Casa Zaguan – mid-afternoon naps are certainly sensible, as this is a place that really springs to life at night. No, it’s not parties that keep folk awake at this Canary Islands glamping site – it’s the stunning displays of stars in the sky at this quiet rural spot in the village of Vilaflor, which calls itself a ‘dedicated astronomy hotel’. How immersed you get in learning about the constellations is up to you: the folk here run nightly sunset/stargazing outings into neighbouring Teide National Park, so you can sign up for some expert insight if you wish. More interested in the pretty patterns than the science bit? Stay put in your pod and you can still take it all in, as each one has a clear roof to allow you to check on what’s currently overhead. Back down at ground level, the pods are also kitted out with electric heating and lighting, and a comfy bed to cosy up in while you examine the heavens. A couple of toilets and shower rooms are a short stroll away from the pods, and there’s also a kitchenette with a fridge for stashing your stargazing snacks. It doesn’t have cooking facilities but there’s a barbecue area just outside, and the hotel restaurant and village bars are only a couple of minutes’ stroll away (highly recommended… less food prep time = more hours to spend by/in the pool).

Local attractions

Sitting around waiting for darkness to fall? Certainly not (well, unless you want to…). Vilaflor, which lays claim to the title of Tenerife’s highest village, is also a handy location for outings into Teide National Park for hikes, bike rides and birdwatching in the mountains. The biggest draw (literally) is huge Mount Teide itself, half an hour’s drive away. Intrepid types can apply for a permit to hike up to the top of the 3,718-metre volcano, but it’s certainly more easygoing if you elect to ride up there in the cable car. Scaling Spain’s highest peak isn’t the only option for peeps on foot – the park’s packed with caves and rock formations to poke about in, and footpaths to get to them (one of which starts from the village). Descend back down to sea level with a trip to the coast – the beaches, watersports and waterparks of Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje are about half an hour away by car, and the latter’s also the place to board boat trips in search of the whales and dolphins that call these waters home.
