  • Family-friendly site close to La Garrotxa Natural Park
  • Minutes away from Banyoles Lake
  • Two pools, garden and bar-restaurant with terrace
Up, up in a lush locale in the Catalonian mountains and close to the blue waters of Banyoles Lake is Girona's Camping La Vall De Campmajor. It's a family-friendly Spanish site with modern facilities and first-rate mountain scenery, in an area with many a walking path and cycling trail nearby – as well as ponds suitable for swimming and many a green field for picnics. It's a fairly sure bet one won't be bored on site either: among the things to do for all ages are two saltwater pools surrounded by a sun terrace; a games room with pool table, football table and toddlers' corner with toys and books, and a garden for kids to mess around in at the zipline and football pitch. The bar-restaurant is open all day for morning drinks on the spacious terrace, afternoon ice creams and evening dinner (the traditional grilled Catalan sausages with spuds is a top pick…) Essentials and freshly baked bread are available to buy at the small grocery store. Campmajor's modern and well-maintained amenities include a washing-up corner, a laundry room and a toilet and shower block with free hot water and a family bathroom.

Local attractions

Many walking paths and cycling trails are within strolling distance of Camping La Vall De Campmajor, so set out with a camera or picnic and see how much of the local terrain you can traverse, and what kind of local wildlife you can spot. The small town of Sant Miquel de Campmajor/Sant Miquel and its Romanesque monuments is nearby. If you dig more old stuff, make the short drive to the Draga Neolithic Park, by a lakeside in a setting inhabited by humans for millenia. It's one of the oldest farming sites in Catalonia and has had excavation going on its land and under its water since 1994: this is the only place on the Iberian Peninsula where tools made only of wood have been fully recovered. Fancy a dip? Plunge into the nearby ponds to cool off, or drive the eight miles to fab Banyoles Lake, for kayaking and canoeing as well as swimming. If you'd prefer a day out at the seaside, both St Martí d' Empúries and Palafrugell are within 60km.
